What is the Right Age to Take your Kids to an Orthodontists?

Age 7 is the Best Time See a Child’s Orthodontist

Orthodontics

Visiting a dentist to check for the early signs of tooth decay should be done as soon as a parent is confident that their child can handle the situation and this applies to visits to an orthodontist too. If there is any sign of misalignment developing in the child’s teeth then this should be addressed as soon as possible. A treatment program started early will ensure any corrections are made with the best outcome and at a lower cost than later in life. Watch the video by Beach Braces to find the answer to the question: Can Orthodontic Treatment be completed on patients with baby teeth?

The American Association of Orthodontists suggests that a child should have his or her first orthodontic evaluation as soon as any orthodontic problem is noticed and at least by the age of 7. This is because by 7 years old the first molars start to erupt, which determines the back bite. This is when an orthodontist can assess side to side and front to back tooth interactions.  For example, when incisors start to erupt it could mean open bite, possible overbite, crowding and gummy smiles.

Intercepting teeth development in their early stages can:

  • Create a room for erupted teeth that may cause overcrowding
  • Have an influence on jaw growth leading to better facial symmetry
  • Allow enough space for unerupted teeth
  • Lower trauma risk to front teeth that are protruding
  • Lower the necessity to undertake tooth removal and decrease the treatment time through the use of braces

Improving the facial appearance and the smile is all part of the orthodontic treatment processes but there are other improvements that can be made to the functioning of the mouth and teeth through orthodontics. This is orthodontic treatment for a bad bite, which is often called malocclusion. A malocclusion occurs when there is misalignment in the tooth or jaw. A malocclusion can have a variety of effects, including altering how you smile, your chewing motion and how you go about cleaning your teeth.

American Association of Orthodontists’ studies indicate that untreated malocclusions can lead to difficulties when brushing and flossing crowded teeth. The result is a greater likelihood of the onset of tooth decay and more severe gum disease. Protruding teeth can be chipped and damaged more easily. Cross bites can lead to poor growth and the uneven wearing of teeth. Open bites can lead to the habit of tongue-thrusting habits and the onset of speech impediments.

Life can be so much easier later on for your child if an orthodontic assessment is arranged by the age of 7 years at least. Request for your child’s first appointment with Beach Braces now.

An Early Orthodontic Consultation – A key to a Perfect Smile

When is the right time for an orthodontic checkup?

The short answer to this question is no later than the age of seven years old.

When most people think of orthodontics and patients who have received orthodontic treatment, they think of older children and teenagers. Receiving an early evaluation however can be one of the best ways that you can prepare yourself for an orthodontic treatment as well as get any early treatment out of the way in the event that a child may need two stage treatment. There are number of advantages to your child seeing an orthodontist no later than the age of seven and this figure has been determined by the American Association of Orthodontists.

Benefits of an Early Evaluation

Early evaluation can allow an orthodontist to spot any problems with the growth of a child’s jaw or with teeth as they are just starting to emerge and replace baby teeth. Even though a child’s baby teeth may appear straight but their emerging teeth may tell a different story. Taking the time to do x-rays early on can help an orthodontist to better identify problems and change the way that teeth impact and grow in. If jaws are misaligned, these issues can be fixed using nonsurgical methods. Resetting a jawline can be much more difficult in older patients as the bone structure is more permanently formed and far more difficult to manipulate.

An orthodontic checkup at an early age can help an orthodontist to monitor your child’s jaw growth and development to make sure that everything will form correctly. Monitoring this growth will allow an orthodontist to intervene if there are any issues so that manipulations can be made to make sure that a child’s smile has a chance to come in naturally.

The Risks of Avoiding Early Treatment

Serious and complicated issues can also occur without proper monitoring. A child could have issues with chewing, speaking or breathing if his or her permanent teeth are allowed to come in without proper consultation.

Early treatment reduces the amount of trauma when it comes to overall orthodontic treatment. It can help to improve appearance as a child grows, can help to lower the risk of serious issues arising and also can work to guide the growth and formation of jaws before they set in place.

Early treatment really is the best way that you can give your child an opportunity to form a perfect healthy smile.

If you have a child that requires early treatment or consultation please call Beach Braces today and we can schedule you an appointment.

Invisible Aligners Explained

Invisible Aligners

How many hours a day do I have to wear them?

Your appliances should be worn at all times (except when eating), even when you sleep.  It is recommended that you wear them 22 hours per day. You should only remove the appliance for eating and to brush your teeth. It is also recommended that you remove them to drink hot liquids (ie: coffee or tea) – so not to compromise the material or burn your mouth. Cold beverages are okay to drink while wearing the aligners.

Can I eat with my aligners on?

Unfortunately not. You will need to remove your aligners when you eat. Make sure to store the aligners in the case provided to avoid accidently throwing them away.Invisalign

Can I take them out to speak at a meeting?

Yes, this one of the advantages of aligners. You may remove them when extremely necessary.

I heard that aligners can get stuck on the teeth, is this true?

No. Aligners are made to fit “snuggly” but can always be removed. This process gets easier with practice.

Will aligners damage my crowns?

No. Crowns are cemented unto your tooth and the aligners are not strong enough to damage crowns. If a crown becomes loose during treatment, then the crown was already loose without you knowing it. You should contact your regular dentist to determine the treatment necessary.

How often are my appointments?

Your appointment intervals will correspond with the number of aligners that you receive at each appointment. You can expect your appointments to occur every 4-6 weeks.

How do I clean my aligners?

Your appliance should be cleaned by holding it in the palm of your hand under running water. Scrub it gently with toothbrush and hand soap. Never use bleach or any other cleaning solutions.  Do not use toothpaste as this scratches the aligner and collects more plaque.

*Remember: if the appliance isn’t in your mouth- it is not working! Your aligners should be in a carrying case when not in your mouth. A word of advice, dogs love aligners, and will nibble and eat the aligner if given a chance.

Invisalign FAQ

Seven Invisalign FAQ’s

Invisalign FAQ’s

Invisalign straightens your teeth without wires and brackets, using a series of clear, customized, removable appliances called aligners. It’s virtually undetectable, which means hardly anyone will know that you’re straightening your teeth. These are some common FAQs for new patient wearing Invisalign.

Invisalign FAQ

1. What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic appliance that works similarly to braces and is completely removable. Invisalign is created using nearly invisible dental aligners made of thermoplastic. The aligners look very similar to teeth whitening trays that you may use it the dentist or you may have purchased from your local drugstore. As you progress through Invisalign treatments you will need to change these aligners to gradually adjust your teeth into the position for your ideal smile.

2. How do the aligners work?

Over time you will need to change out the aligners to move your teeth into their correct position. The aligners will put a controlled force on teeth to slowly move them into their position. Orthodontists will map out these forces and dictate how aligners should be adjusted to properly adjust your teeth. Over the length of your treatment your teeth will gradually move as you change each aligner until they are eventually formed into their correct structure.

3. How would Invisalign treatment affect me?

Unlike braces and some other forms of traditional orthodontic appliances, Invisalign is completely removable. Patients are only required to wear Invisalign for 20-22 hours a day for the best results. Removing the aligners to eat or drink means that you are not restricted in the types of food that you would regularly eat and you will also have no difficulties cleaning your teeth. The best part is the aligners are virtually invisible so it will be very difficult for anyone to know that you are undergoing orthodontic treatment. Invisalign may be a bit uncomfortable for the first few days that you wear the aligners, but after that they have a minimal effect on your life.

Invisalign vs braces

4. Do I need to take care of my aligners?

You will need to clean your aligners regularly. You can do this by both brushing them as you would your teeth and rinsing them with lukewarm water, or looking into the specialty Invisalign cleaning system. Changing  your aligners whenever your orthodontist recommends is also required as part of your treatment.

5. How long does the treatment take?

Treatment will depend on how severe your individual case is. The average amount of time that the aligners are used is around 12 months for adults. Your orthodontist will be able to give you an indication of the amount of time your treatment may take but ultimately the deciding factor will be how well you personally adjust to treatment with the aligners.

6. How often will I need to schedule appointments?

Invisalign will require less appointments than with traditional braces but you should still see your orthodontist at least once every 4 to 6 weeks to track your progress.

7. How much does Invisalign cost?

Only your individual orthodontist will be able to determine the full cost of Invisalign. It depends on the amount of treatment that you need individually and the number of aligners that you might need to complete your treatment. Some of the factors on pricing include: The area that you live in, the difficulty of your case and the amount of orthodontic insurance coverage you may have. The national average for the cost of Invisalign treatment in the United States is around $5000.

How Invisalign Works

Invisalign Explained

Becoming familiar with the full process of Invisalign will help you to understand the treatment process. Many people are extremely hesitant to see an orthodontist or begin straightening their teeth because of the stigma that is attached with braces and other forms of orthodontic appliances.

Invisalign offers up freedom of choice to patients by giving them a treatment option that works faster and is also far less noticeable than traditional orthodontic treatment. Here is the process of how Invisalign works.

Invisalign

Speaking with an Invisalign provider: most orthodontist today can offer Invisalign as a treatment option but it’s very important that you see an experienced Invisalign Platinum Provider as they are knowledgeable with the costs, scheduling and the process. It is important to note that Invisalign can be more expensive than traditional forms of braces but it is also far more convenient throughout treatment. With an investment such as Invisalign it’s very important that you meet with an orthodontist that you are comfortable with and knows the process well. Treatment can be a big investment and is not a decision to be taken lightly. Your orthodontist will be able to determine if Invisalign is a good treatment option for you and can also walk you through the process. It is important to note that some patients will not qualify for treatment with Invisalign and may require other forms of orthodontic treatment before they can begin this type of treatment.

Scanning and imaging: after you have decided to undergo Invisalign treatment your doctor will begin to create x-rays, pictures and specialty moulds or impressions of your teeth. All of this data will be sent off to the manufacturer where a 3-D model will be created of your teeth. Your orthodontist can then work through a computer simulation to map out your entire treatment plan as well as show you how your teeth will look after each stage of the treatment.

Receiving your first aligners: aligners will then be manufactured to begin your treatment. The aligners are created using BPA free plastic that is extremely strong and also much more comfortable than traditional braces. You will need to wear your aligners for around 22 hours per day in order to stay on track with your treatments. The aligners will gradually shift your teeth into place and need to be changed out every two weeks on average to advance to the next stage of your treatment.

Regular checkups: you will have to go to regular checkups every six weeks to see how your treatment is progressing. At your appointment you can pick up new aligners as well as ask any questions to your orthodontist about your treatment. As long as you continue to change your aligners every two weeks and wear them for the prescribed amount of time you should be able to complete your treatment just as it was computer modelled.

Given that Invisalign entails a substantial investment, it’s imperative that you don’t cut corners when it comes to choosing your doctor. Dr Panucci has a wealth of experience in providing orthodontic treatments including Invisalign. You can read more about Dr Panucci by clicking here.
