Toddlers Teeth Development

Can Pacifying Toddlers Harm the Development of Teeth?

The question of providing a pacifier for a crying baby continues to perplex parents even today. Some parents sidestep the problem in favor of thumb sucking, but this relinquishes control over the use of the comforting device. Many experts discourage the use of pacifiers because excessive use can affect the shape of the mouth and the normal eruption of adult teeth.

Pacifiers and Baby Teeth:

Many parents believe they don’t have to worry about baby teeth, but the loss of these teeth can affect the positioning of the adult teeth as they emerge. When the baby teeth are lost early, adult teeth may come in crooked, crowded or with over- or under-bites. These problems can be avoided with early intervention by a trained children’s orthodontist.

Problems Associated With Pacifier Use:
Experts warn that pacifier use after the age of three can cause a number of problems, such as:

  • Shifting or moving of upper teeth
  • Unattractive molding of facial structures
  • Increased risk of middle ear infections

Orthodontics For Children:

Orthodontics is a specialty field of dentistry that deals with problems of tooth alignment and dysfunction in mouth structures. Orthodontists are dental professionals that receive three additional years of training in the diagnosis and treatment of facial abnormalities and dental alignment. They analyze dental problems through the visual examination of mouth tissues and x-ray of the bones of the mouth and jaw. With this information, the orthodontist can then design a treatment program to restore teeth and jaws to full function. Orthodontics for children can help to improve eating ability to ensure good health and can increase self-esteem for better overall well being.

Types of Orthodontic Problem:

The use of pacifiers over a long period of time can cause tooth alignment problems or exacerbate problems that already exist in the facial structure.

  • Anteroposterior deviations are problems such as underbite and overbite that can impede proper speech and eating function.
  • Tooth overcrowding can occur when the jaw space is not large enough to accommodate that size of the adult teeth and can also occur when alignment is disrupted by actions such as using a pacifier.
  • Poor appearance can result when adult teeth do not fit the shape of the face or when teeth are positioned in an unattractive way.

If Your Child Needs Braces:

Straightening teeth may be done with a variety of devices, such as braces, headgear and retainers. Today, braces are made of a variety of materials to suit each orthodontic need, including stainless steel, plastic, ceramics and combinations of these materials. A highly trained and experienced children’s orthodontist will be able to determine the best type of device needed to correct your child’s dental problems.

If you have concerns about the affect of the use of pacifiers on your toddler’s teeth, make an appointment today at Beach Braces to discuss the problem and possible solutions with an experienced and caring children’s orthodontist.

Science vs. Love; The Showdown

Smile Quote, Beach Braces, Manhattan Beach, CA

Smile Quote #35: “Science Teaches to Think but Love teaches to Smile”- Bei Maejor

Science really can’t define all of the reasons that make each individual smile. Ultimately it’s up to that individual to find what they love and to share their smile with the world. Thinking about other people and thinking about the world around us can sometimes cause us to smile, but more often than not it’s the unexplainable things that grant us  a sense of wonder and make a smile come across our face much more readily.

It’s important to take some time to find the unexplained and to experience new things that make us smile. When we get outside our comfort zones it can be tough for the same toothy grins to come out every single day. Finding out those that can make us smile and allow us to share stories, form connections and enjoy a better quality of life are always welcomed in the human experience.

When it comes to smiling and happiness quite often the times in which we smile the most are when we are with our loved ones. When a loved one shares a smile with us we almost automatically return it to them. But it is possible to get to the point where when you share a smile with a complete stranger they can feel your caring nature and return a smile as well. Even though we may not know exactly why, returning a smile to a complete stranger or a loved one is something that we simply do without thinking of it. Some of us hold back our smile however because we are unsure of how it looks. It’s important to gain a confidence in your smile so that you can use it as a communication tool and a way that you can share moments with others.

If you need help with your smile Dr. Patricia Panucci Beach Braces is available to help bring your confidence in your smile back to you. With our team of experts and multiple treatment options available we can help you get your ideal smile.

Sodas: The Most Effective Teeth Killers

Orthodontic Dangers: Acid/Sodas and Loose Brackets

There is long standing evidence that drinking sodas or any type of drink that is carbonated and contains sugar will damage your teeth through the process of erosion. These drinks are extremely harmful to teeth. The question that many are pondering is whether or not these type of drinks pose any additional risks for those who wear braces.

The Indestructible Myth:

  1. Dr. Patricia Panucci is a respected orthodontist in the Manhattan Beach area, meaning she deals with quite a few cases in which the need to repair or replace braces exists. One of the most common misconceptions from those outside the world of dentistry is the belief that because the vast majority of braces are made of metal, they are indestructible. The truth is that there are a number of food types that can destroy the tooth and wreak havoc on braces.

The Dangers of Soda and Acid:

Whether you are wearing braces or not, the consumption of sweetened carbonated soft drinks poses an immediate threat to your teeth. In examining some of the comments on forums that discuss this very issue, it is easy to see that most people are completely oblivious to the dangers of the common soft drink beverages that are consumed daily. The problem is that being oblivious to the knowledge of the consequences of drinking these dangerous beverages does not exempt a person from them.

One of the most common negative effects of drinking carbonated sugary drinks is that they contribute heavily to tooth erosion. Tooth erosion is the slow process in which the surface of a person’s teeth is worn away. It is the loss of tooth structure, a gradual process with long lasting repercussions. This wearing away of the structure is due to the weakening of the dental enamel on the teeth. This thin layer of enamel is responsible for the maintenance of the tooth’s shape and structure. As the enamel wears away, it becomes increasingly difficult for the tooth to maintain its normal shape, strength and structure, resulting in a number of different dental issues. Tooth erosion is one of the greatest concerns when it comes to oral health care.

Diet Sodas Too

Because most people who are aware of the dangers of sodas to teeth believe that the culprit is the sugar contained in the sodas, they postulate that drinking diet sodas is the answer. This could not be further from the truth. The sugar in these drinks does play a major role in tooth decay, but it is the acid that has the greatest impact on the destruction of tooth enamel. Normally, the body has a natural way of combating the effects of acid on the teeth. The process is known as remineralization. Remineralization occurs when the calcium in your saliva helps to re-strengthen teeth after small amounts of acid have been consumed; however, when large amounts are consumed it does not allow the remineralization process to occur.

Damaged Braces

The acid in the sodas also wreaks havoc on braces, specifically the brackets. The acid degrades the effectiveness of the glue that is used to hold the braces onto the teeth. This causes the orthodontic brackets to become loose and subsequently fall off. This is one of the top reasons that orthodontist such as Dr. Panucci have to repair and replace braces.

If you or a loved one lives in the Manhattan Beach area, and you are in need of having your braces replaced or repaired, or maybe in need of a new set of braces, you should contact Dr. Panucci’s office to discuss the benefits of active self-ligating brackets.

Be a Smile on Someone Else’s Face!

 orthodontics, smile quote

Smile Quote # 34: “For a Moment Atleast, be a Smile on Someone Else’s Face”- Dejan Stojanovic

One of the nicest parts about a smile is that it can be shared and very easily returned by everyone around us. This means that every moment that we choose to smile could be a moment that our smile is returned back to us by a passer-by, co-worker, family member or a friend. Think of some of the people that inspire you and make you happy on any given day, when we imagine them smiling it almost makes us want to smile too. You can have the same effect in somebody else’s life and really all you need to do to share this wonderful feeling is to share your smile as often as possible.

Having one of these moments in our day can completely turn it around and make us feel much better. If you are experiencing a difficult time or a particularly stressful day taking the time to smile and share a smile with somebody else can make a true difference. Even if it’s just for a moment, this quote is a true prescription for increasing positivity in your life.

However, saying that you will spend time smiling and actually sharing a smile are two different things. It can be difficult for some people to share their smile with others because they are embarrassed of the type of smile that they have. Luckily there are solutions to this problem, which come in the form of professional orthodontic treatment.  With Dr. Patricia Panucci and her team at Beach Braces, it’s possible to receive your ideal smile so that you no longer have to hide your teeth or hide sharing a smile with the people around you. With the help of our team we can help you share your smile with others and create inspiration every day. You can contact us today for making an appointment.

May is National Teen Self-esteem Month

National Teen Self-Esteem Month

May is National Teen Self-esteem Month

May is National Teen Self-esteem Month

National Teen Self-esteem Month is a time to recognize the importance of how young people feel about themselves and how their feelings can affect their physical and mental health. The teenage years are a time when a teen’s self-esteem needs to be nurtured and supported by family, friends and other necessary people in their lives.

What is self-esteem?

The National Association for Self-Esteem defines self-esteem as “The experience of being capable of meeting life’s challenges and being worthy of happiness.” Yet many teens find it difficult to meet these goals because of various hurdles.

For example, bullying (both in person and cyberbullying) is a serious problem among teenagers. Teens’ peers can say and write cruel, untrue things. Teen self-esteem can rapidly erode, and the result can be depression, eating disorders, drop in grades, truancy, drug and alcohol use and even suicide.

However, parents and other caring individuals can help teenagers meet these hurdles head on. Concerned individuals who want to know how to increase teenager self-esteem need to identify the factors that are bothering a young person, recognize the impact it has on the adolescent and then offer guidance in a cooperative manner.

Tips on how to raise self-esteem:

If you are a teen who is experiencing self-esteem issues or a concerned adult who is concerned about a teen’s self-esteem, here are some tips.

Acknowledge how body image affects your self-esteem. Lots of pressure is placed on teenagers to look a certain way, and typically those expectations are not realistic. Teens who have problems with body image could benefit from talking with someone they trust about their concerns.

Banish the negative. Teens who say negative things about themselves (e.g., I’m too fat, I’m not popular) or who listen to others who say such things need to replace the negative words with positive ones. Whenever negative thoughts or words occur, teens should replace them immediately with positive thoughts (e.g., I am great at math, I enjoy playing the trumpet).

Squash comparisons. When people compare themselves to others, they will always find someone who is better and worse at something than they are. Playing the comparison game is a waste of time and energy. Teens should be encouraged to celebrate who they are as unique beings who can make choices that will lead them on a path of personal fulfillment.

Smile. A smile communicates confidence and a great smile can make people feel on top of their game. Teens who don’t feel good about their smile can talk to their parents about what can be done to give them that extra boost of confidence.

National Teen Self-esteem Month is about many things, and one of them is how to increase teenager self-esteem in effective ways. Dr. Patricia J. Panucci, DMD, MS, and other folks at Beach Braces in Manhattan Beach can help put a smile on the face of your teenager. Give us a call today.

Kids Enlighten a World with their Smiles

Orthodontics

Smile Quote # 33: “Children Show me in their Playful Smiles the Divine in Everyone.”- Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson was a beloved entertainer who knew very much about the power of a smile. His work inspired millions of people to let out their smile and he was often seen smiling as he performed and in many of his music videos. You don’t have to be a big Hollywood star or performing musician to show off a beautiful smile. In fact when you show off your smile you never quite know who could be watching you or who it might inspire.

You may have noticed that with children, many kids have no problem sharing great big toothy grins regardless of the condition of their teeth. As many kids start to lose their primary teeth, it can create gaps, spaces and other issues which prevent them from achieving a perfect smile or even having a perfect row of teeth whenever they smile. All the same children don’t seem to care about the condition of their teeth and readily share their smiles with anyone with complete confidence. As we become adults we start to become more self-conscious of our smiles and it can sometimes be difficult for us to share those same big, toothy childlike grins. Ultimately it is possible to get this confidence back especially if you are willing to work with a team of orthodontic professionals as an adult.

By working with the team of Dr. Patricia Panucci in Manhattan Beach at Beach Braces, it’s possible that you can regain the same childlike confidence to bring out your smile once again. Whether you are an adult, a young adult or a child, orthodontic care can help you to unlock confidence in your smile and ensure that you can show off your ideal smile. Contact us today.

Work Hard, Hide the Frustration

Smile Quote # 32: “Be Like a Duck, Paddling and Working very Hard Inside the Water, but What Everyone Sees is a Smiling and Calm Face.”  – Manoj Arora

Some of the strongest and most inspiring people that you know most likely don’t carry a lot of negativity with them throughout their lives or even day-to-day. This is because negativity can actually be quite damaging to us accomplishing our goals throughout the day or even long-term. If we want to be inspiring to other people as well as share lots of positive energy with others the easiest way we can do this is by sharing a smile.

A smile is the perfect way that we can show everyone that we are in control, feeling positive, and that we are approachable. Many people think ducks are cute because they always seem to be smiling and if you carry on with the ducks example is a good chance that you could be perceived in the exact same way. Ultimately people who smile often are the ones who are more easily approachable and more fun to have around at parties and social functions as well.

For some people however it can be very difficult to share their smile with strangers, family members or even friends. This is because they have difficulty showing off their smile for any number of reasons. Whether you have gaps in your teeth, an overbite, crooked teeth or crowding within your teeth there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to show off your smile. Everyone’s teeth are a little bit different and not every human being can achieve perfectly straight teeth. Sometimes people need just a little bit of help to achieve their ideal smile.

The team at Dr. Patricia Panucci can ensure results for anyone who is interested in improving their smile so that they can use it with confidence. Contact Dr. Patricia Panucci for a free consultation today.

Photogenic Smiling

Updated: 31/07/16

Some History about Smiling in Photographs

smilingSmiling when we have our picture taken is so natural it would seem that people have been doing it since the camera was first invented. But if you’ve ever looked at old photos from the 19th century, you’ve probably noticed that people back then had serious, tight-lipped expressions on their faces in pictures. Was life so hard in those days that no one felt like smiling? No, that’s probably not it. There are a lot of theories as to why 19th-century folks kept straight faces for photos, and why the trend changed towards smiling later on.

Taking a Picture Back Then Took a Long Time

Before cameras, people didn’t usually smile when they had their portraits painted, probably because they had to sit for a long time for portraits and it’s hard to keep a smile pasted on your face for that long. The first people who ever sat for photographs may have assumed the non-smiling portrait tradition was logical, and besides, the first cameras required that the subjects of photos sit still for a long time too. The very first photo ever taken was taken from a window in France, and it took 8 hours to expose. That was in 1826, but by 1939 photos only took 15 minutes. Still, that’s a long time to sit with a smile on your face: hard enough for adults and probably even harder for children.

Getting Your Picture Taken Was a Serious Business

People in the past considered getting a photo taken to be a serious affair, sort of like getting married or receiving a college diploma. Today this may seem silly, but back then, people rarely owned their own cameras, and gathering the family for a portrait was time-consuming, expensive, and basically a big event.

Bad Teeth?

It’s true that people in the 19th century didn’t have easy or affordable access to dentists, and as a result, many people had bad teeth. But since bad teeth were so common, it probably wouldn’t have been a big embarrassment to show them in a photo. It’s unlikely; therefore, that this was the reason people didn’t smile for pictures.

Today it’s another story. Smiling in photos probably became popular when home cameras became available and affordable, and photography sessions ceased to be formal occasions. However it started, there’s no doubt that today smiling when you have your picture taken is virtually a requirement. And people who have bad teeth today know all too well that it definitely is embarrassing to smile in photos. Those Hollywood smiles are what people want to see in pictures, and if you don’t have one, you either smile with your lips tightly closed, or avoid having your picture taken at all.

If you’ve ever wished you had a better smile, an orthodontist in Manhattan Beach can help. Dr. Patricia Panucci is a Manhattan Beach orthodontist who is committed to working with her patients to help them achieve optimum oral health and a great smile. Her orthodontic practice, Beach Braces, offers several types of braces including metal, clear, Invisalign and lingual (behind the teeth) braces. Smile Quote # 31: “Anyone Who has a Continuous Smile on his Face Conceals a Toughness that’s Almost Frightening” – Greta Garbo

Getting through tough situations sometimes requires much more than keeping a tough exterior throughout. When we smile we can take on just about any difficult situation. Keeping positive on the inside and the outside is how we can deal with serious issues we face every day. Just as the quote would suggest someone who constantly remains positive could be one of the absolute toughest people you know.

They are always ready to combat any negativity in their lives and meet it head on with positivity. When we smile it only encourages positivity in ourselves and in the people around us. A smile usually brings about even more smiles which are returned to us. Even something as simple as that action can make us feel much better when we are experiencing difficulty in our lives. For some individuals however it can be difficult to constantly share a smile with the people around them, and this is usually because they don’t have confidence in their smile.
