4 Best Ways to Wear a Great Smile 2016

smile

Wear an Attractive Smile

When you get dressed in the morning, make sure to smile and look at your teeth because nothing you wear is more important than your smile. If you are spending hundreds of dollars on expensive blouses and slacks, then you can also invest in repairing your teeth by visiting an orthodontist. The first thing that someone notices about you is your smile instead of your outfit, so when you decide to learn more about modern orthodontic treatment, you are making a great choice. At an orthodontic facility, you will undergo a complete examination to determine if you have mild, moderate or severe malocclusions of your teeth.

Straighten Your Teeth

If you have a few teeth that are misaligned, then you are likely a candidate for Invisalign aligners. These plastic aligners are clear, and you can smile throughout the day without anyone noticing the devices. You must wear your aligners as much as possible, but it is possible to remove the devices when you are eating food or brushing your teeth. After two weeks, you will throw away the old aligners to change to a new set. Alternatively, if you have severely misaligned teeth, then you need to wear braces for two to four years. Fortunately, there are lingual devices that you can wear on the backs of your teeth to ensure that your smile is still gorgeous.

4 Ways to Wear a Great Smile

2 Food Checklists to Avoid Brace Problems 2016

food

Food is essential. Most of us pretended our chewing gum was braces more than once throughout our childhood, but we didn’t have to live with them. It’s safe to say we all went through a phase where we thought wearing braces was cool, especially when our friends were showing off their cool new colorful bands. Orange and black during the Halloween season, and they boasted red and green when it was Christmas. We looked at our straight teeth in the mirror and tried to convince our parents they were crooked and we needed thousands upon thousands of dollars in metal in our mouths.

What were we thinking? There’s nothing particularly enjoyable about needing our smiles corrected, but many people go through life with crooked teeth easily fixable with the help of some orthodontic correction. Growing up, wearing colorful bands was a fun idea. Our friends who did require a mouth full of metal didn’t think it was so much fun when they realized just how limited they really were as it pertained to eating and basic oral hygiene. Braces might seem like a lot of fun to those who don’t wear them, but there’s some serious limitation involved. The biggest challenge comes when you can no longer eat your favorite things. Your orthodontist recommends avoiding a number of specific food items with orthodontics in your mouth.

Food to Avoid

Your orthodontic appliances are nothing more than metal and wire holding your teeth together to help straighten them and keep them in line. They’re not nearly as strong as you might imagine, which leaves them highly susceptible to damage from certain food items.

  • Sticky candy
  • Hard chocolate
  • Nuts
  • Hard taco shells
  • Popcorn
  • Ice
  • Pretzels
  • Crackers
  • Hard cookies
  • Gum
  • Hard candy

These are items your orthodontist wants you to stay away from at all costs. Each one is designed to taste amazing, but they’re not good for your mouth’s new hardware. Hard, sticky items such as these do a number on your orthodontics, which causes more problems for your mouth. These are foods most susceptible to becoming stuck in your metal or wires, and sometimes that’s more painful than anything else.

Its only for a while

It’s not easy to say goodbye to these items when your mouth is full of hardware, but you shouldn’t eat any of the items on this list. Try to remind yourself it’s not forever. You aren’t being asked to give up your favorite movie theater popcorn for the rest of our life. You’re only giving it up until your smile is picture perfect and your hardware is removed for good.

Your kids might not appreciate all the changes they’re making now that they have a mouth filled with hardware, but you will. Not only do they need to be extra careful with their food, they have to get rid of some nasty habits. Do your kids bite their nails or chew on their pens when they’re sitting in class? If they do, they have to stop now. These are both dangerous to the hardware in their mouth. It can cause the wires to snap, the metal to bend, and another trip to the orthodontist to become necessary.

Food to Be Careful With

As if avoiding things like hard Taco Tuesday when your mouth is full of metal isn’t depressing enough, that’s not all you have to be careful with. Your orthodontist is going to provide you a list of things you should be very careful eating when you have your new hardware applied to your teeth. These are foods you can eat, but you need to cut up, break apart, and be very careful with during your meals.

  • Subs
  • Corn on the cob
  • Croutons
  • Thin pizza crust
  • Bread
  • Raw veggies
  • Rolls
  • Burgers
  • Meat
  • Fruit

If you love these items, you’ll feel good knowing you can still eat them. Just be careful with them as you eat. Try cutting them into small pieces, breaking your bread apart, and pulling your corn off the cob. These items tend to get stuck in your mouth, which can cause some damage to the hardware in there. You’re not going to have a difficult time eating them if you’re just a bit more careful about what you put into your mouth.

The good news is you can still eat most anything you loved before, but you have to be careful. You might not be able to have hard taco shells on Taco Tuesday, but you can have soft ones for a while. When your hardware is removed, you can go back to eating anything you want without worrying about your expensive hardware breaking. If you’re a child reading this, it does get better.

Good Hygiene Habits

Right now the excitement of having a mouth filled with metal is wearing off for the kids, and you’re dealing with unhappy little people who just want hard candy and popcorn. They’re unhappy about all the life changes they’ve had to make since their visit to the ortho, and you’re left dealing with the aftermath. It’s going to become slightly more difficult when you have to inform your kids they need to be extra careful with their teeth cleaning and care with all that equipment in there.

One of the first things you’ll do when your kids come home from the ortho with their new mouth accessory is replace their toothbrush. They need one with very soft bristles, as they are much less likely to damage the wires and metal. Your kids also need to begin flossing right away. If they weren’t great about it before, now is the time for them to get used to it on a regular basis. The ortho wants your kids to start brushing and flossing every time they eat. Food tends to get stuck in the wires and metal in their mouth. It can cause far more issues than not if it remains there.

It’s a good idea to provide your kids with a secondary soft toothbrush and some floss to carry with them to school. You might provide their teachers with a note stating they need a moment after lunch to run into the restroom and brush to keep their mouth healthy.

In Addition

In addition to practicing extra precaution with their new accessory, your kids need to consider additional mouth protection when playing sports. Your kids can still pay sports. There’s no reason they need to quit just because of their new accessory, but they must practice extra care to prevent damage or injury. A custom mouth guard is the best idea on the top and bottom of the mouth. It’s important not only to keep hardware from becoming damaged but to keep your child’s mouth from becoming injured. It’s not uncommon for a child to tear his or her lips or another child’s skin a contact sport with their metal, and we know you want to practice extra precaution to prevent this from occurring.

It might seem that life is ending with all these rules and worries, but the reward is worth it in the end. Your child’s smile will light up a room when it’s perfect. The added confidence they receive from their new smile will change their life. It’s a bit of sacrifice for a time, but it’s not the end of the world. The kids will become used to things, and they will appreciate this sacrifice later in life. If anything ever happens to the hardware in their mouth, call the orthodontist right away. Make sure to schedule an appointment to repair it as quickly as possible with http://www.beachbraces.org/. Dr. Panucci is there for you when you need additional care for your mouth, if you have questions, or if you have concerns about your new hardware.

2 Food Checklists to Avoid Brace Problems 2016

Can retainers fix a slight shift of teeth after braces?

retainers

An orthodontic patient’s most anticipated appointment day is probably the day that their braces are finally removed, and they are able to see the unencumbered results of the time and money that they have devoted to their teeth. While the excitement of seeing their new smile is justified, it is important for them to keep in mind that the treatment is not yet complete. They still need to make sure they continue with retainers.

After The Braces Are Removed

The process of teeth straightening doesn’t end with the removal of braces. As with any other diagnosis, you should follow the prescribed treatment plan to get the results that you want. In addition, there is a level of after-care for the teeth that has to be maintained in order to protect the investment that you have made.

After the removal of the braces, your orthodontist will want to evaluate how well the teeth have been aligned, possibly by taking a bite impression or an X-ray, if necessary. Thus, if the patient is a child or teenager, the teeth may be examined to determine if there has been a growth of wisdom teeth. If so, you may advised to have them removed as the emergence of the wisdom teeth could affect the alignment of the teeth that had been straightened.

Retainers

The natural shifting of teeth is inevitable as one grows into an adult and then ages. This is also true for teeth that have been straightened with braces. A retainer is an orthodontic device that is tailored-made for your teeth and mouth and that is used as a safeguard to maintain the alignment of the corrected teeth. They can be categorized as removable or fixed. Consequently each type of retainer has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Removable retainers can be removed and placed back into the mouth at will and requires some compliance on the part the patient in order to be used as prescribed by orthodontists. Finally, there are two types of removable retainers:

Removable

• Hawley – Accordingly, these retainers have a metal wire that runs across the front of your teeth and are attached to an acrylic piece that fits into the roof of your mouth. They tend to be the most-used type. You can have a creatively personalized retainer as they come in a variety of styles and colors. They will not prevent your teeth from touching naturally and can be adjusted to adhere to any change in teeth alignment. Furthermore, while they are durable and easy to clean, they can be very noticeable to others and can alter your speech when they are initially worn.

• Clear Plastic – These retainers are sometimes also referred to as vacuum-formed retainers. They are made of a clear plastic that is molded to fit the teeth and can appear almost invisible when worn. There are a few marked differences when compared to the Hawley retainers. They do not tend to last as long and prevent your teeth from touching naturally and cannot be adjusted.

Fixed

Fixed or permanent retainers are composed of a thin wire that runs across the back of the teeth where they are bonded or glued in place. They are invisible to others, but can make the flossing your teeth difficult. They can remain inside of the mouth indefinitely. In order to have them removed safely, you would have to see a professional.

Retainers FAQ

Are Retainers Able To Fix Shifts of Teeth?

Retainers are a vital part of oral care after the removal of braces. Consequently, they are used to ensure that the patient’s teeth remain straightened and in place. The muscles, bones, gums adjust to the new position of your teeth. If a retainer is not used as directed by the orthodontist the teeth return to their original positions and a loss of the investment that has been made into getting the smile that you wanted. This is particularly important with children and teenagers who have had their braces removed, as their bones are still growing.

If the shifting of the teeth is minimal, a retainer could be used to move the teeth back to how they were positioned when the braces were initially removed. Finally, the retainer must never be forced onto the teeth if it doesn’t fit. Consequently, if this is the case, the patient should contact their orthodontic specialist regarding corrective procedures.

How Long Should Retainers Be Worn?

The frequency and the length of time a retainer is worn after braces are removed varies from patient to patient. You should follow the instructions of your orthodontist.

You will need to wear the retainer all day, for the first few months. In the case of a removable retainer, as the structures around the teeth adjust to the new position of the teeth, you may be able to wear the retainer with less frequency. Your retainer, whether it is removable or fixed, is a permanent part of your long-term treatment plan for maintaining straight teeth. This plan could conceivably last for years.

braces colors

LAST UPDATED: JULY 29, 2016

Do Braces Come in Different Colors?

If you or your child needs to get braces, you have many color options to choose from. The days of being forced to wear ugly metallic braces are long gone. Now you can at least have colored braces that are stylish and make you feel more confident while you are wearing them. How do you decide which color to choose? Let’s take a look at some of the steps you should take to find the colored braces that are right for you:

Braces Colors FAQ

What is the color selector?

Talk to your orthodontist and find out if he or she has a braces color selector, which is sometimes called a color wheel. This will give you a list of all of the braces colors options that are available to you. Consider these colors for a long time before you actually get the braces. This will prevent you from being forced to make a fast decision.

What are my braces color options?

You need to remember that the colors that you see represented on the selector are going to appear lighter when you see them on your actual braces. There are also color wheels online that you can take a look at before you visit your orthodontist. These will give you an idea of what you can expect. Ideally, you want to find a color wheel online that is interactive. This will allow you to place the various colors onto a photo of teeth that are wearing braces. By doing this, you can see what you are going to look like when wearing the different colors. However, some of the colors featured on various websites may not be available at your orthodontist’s office. You should also consider getting clear braces.

Think about mixing certain colors, such as:

  • Rainbow colors
  • Silver and gold
  • The colors of your school
  • Your favorite colors
  • Colors associated with holidays: orange and black for Halloween, Green and red for Christmas, etc.
  • The colors of your favorite sports team
  • The colors of your country’s flag

What are some tips for selecting braces colors?

The colors of your hair and skin will both be major factors in determining how your braces eventually look on you. Avoid choosing colors that will clash with your particular color of skin and hair.

  • Hair and skin colors that are lighter have a tendency to look good with braces that are royal blue, plum, raspberry, salmon, bronze, petrol blue, blue-green, bluish red, green khaki, caramel and vermilion.
  • Hair and skin colors that are darker have a tendency to look good with braces that are violet, fuchsia, anise green, turquoise, gold, pink, pastel blue, orange or dark blue.

When to see an orthodontist

Orthodontists sometimes see conditions in teeth that may give clues about the person’s health that other medical professionals might have missed. One example is celiac disease. This allergy to gluten can result in the decay of tooth enamel. It can also lead to canker sores in the mouth. However, there are more and more gluten-free ingredients and recipes available all the time, and as a result, celiac sufferers have more access than ever before to a gluten-free diet.

One of the things gluten-free eaters miss the most is sweets like cookies and cake because they are often made with flour. That is why a recipe for gluten-free Amaretti biscuits is such a treat for people with celiac.

Damage to teeth from celiac cannot be reversed, but it can be stopped, and there are a number of procedures that can improve the look of teeth if necessary. Although invisalign braces are not a treatment that an orthodontist might do to repair teeth damaged from celiac disease, anyone with a gluten allergy who cares enough about the condition and appearance of their teeth to wear braces will not want to damage them further. Recipes like gluten-free Amaretti biscuits can help prevent that damage.

These are a great treat to have with tea or coffee, and one of the best things about them is that they are naturally gluten-free. Too often, recipes that are normally made with wheat or other grains that are adapted to be gluten-free are disappointing by comparison. This is not the case with these delicious gluten-free Amaretti biscuits.

Whether or not you are dedicated to living gluten-free, you might be concerned about your own smile or those of your family members. If your own teeth or your children’s teeth look overcrowded or crooked, give us a call today to speak to an orthodontist about invisalign braces.

  • 6 oz fresh mozzarella cheese, cut into 6 slices
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 5 large fresh basil leaves, shredded

  1. Heat oven to 425°F. Line cookie sheet with cooking parchment paper; spray paper with cooking spray. Set aside.
  2. Place half of the cauliflower in food processor. Cover; process until very finely ground. Repeat with other half of cauliflower. Transfer to microwavable bowl. There should be about 3 cups of packed cauliflower.
  3. Microwave cauliflower uncovered on High 5 minutes. Meanwhile, place colander over a large bowl. Line colander with kitchen towel. Transfer microwaved cauliflower to towel; set aside to cool about 10 minutes or until cool enough to handle. Squeeze water from cauliflower by wrapping the towel around it and twisting. Remove as much liquid as possible. Set aside to cool 5 minutes.
  4. In medium bowl, beat egg, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon pepper and 3/4 cup mozzarella cheese with fork. Add cauliflower, and combine using hands, kneading mixture together. Discard any large bits of cauliflower.
  5. Sprinkle shredded Parmesan in 6 small mounds on cookie sheet. Divide dough into 6 equal balls; shape into hockey puck shapes. Place 1 piece of dough on top of each mound of Parmesan. Gently press out dough into discs, about 1/4 inch thick. Press together any ragged edges to prevent burning.
  6. Bake crust without toppings 20 to 25 minutes or until easy to turn; remove from oven, and use pancake turner to gently peel and release pizzas from parchment. Turn over pizzas, and top with 3 tomato slices per pizza, 1 slice fresh mozzarella, salt and pepper. Bake 8 minutes. Top with shredded basil.

Take Care of Your Teeth, Too

Being healthy doesn’t have to be boring; it can be fun. Here’s a tasty recipe for mini pizzas that will seem like a party and keep you hearty. These mini pizzas are completely gluten free–how do they do it? The crust is made from cauliflower and cheese, no gluten products at all. Also included in the crust are egg, salt, and black pepper. The toppings are tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, salt, black pepper, and fresh basil leaves. The ingredients are simple, healthy, and non-processed.

Another great way to be healthy is to care for your teeth. Be sure to visit the orthodontist to see if you need braces. Crowded teeth can lead to uneven wear, tooth decay, chipping, gum disease, and other problems. Braces can correct this and can even be invisible with invisalign.

Cook Tasty Pasta

Finding easy to chew foods after you begin to wear Invisalign aligners is a good plan because your mouth’s soft tissues may develop some sensitivity. A fast recipe to prepare is vegan rigatoni peperonata, and the tiny pieces of olives, bell peppers and onions combined with pasta and herbs helps to make this dish delicious.

Choose Nutritious Vegetables

An orthodontist will recommend that patients wearing braces continue to consume a lot of nutrients from brightly-colored vegetables. However, some patients find it difficult to chew hard foods right after beginning their orthodontic treatment. While becoming accustomed to having plastic aligners or metal wires on your teeth, choose meals that contain numerous minerals and vitamins.

Gluten Free Prosciutto-Wrapped Scallops with Spinach

Prosciutto-Wrapped Scallops with Spinach

INGREDIENTS

• 12 large dry sea scallops, (about 1 pound; see Note)
• 1/4 teaspoon lemon pepper
• 1 1/4 ounces very thinly sliced prosciutto, (about 3 slices), cut into 12 long strips
• 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
• 1 teaspoon freshly grated lemon zest
• 1 tablespoon lemon juice
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• Freshly ground pepper, to taste
• 12 ounces baby spinach

PREPARATION

1. Place rack in upper third of oven; preheat broiler. Coat a large baking sheet with cooking spray.
2. Pat scallops dry and sprinkle both sides with lemon pepper. Wrap 1 piece of prosciutto around each scallop. Thread 3 scallops crosswise onto each skewer (securing the prosciutto to the scallop) and place on the prepared baking sheet. Broil until just cooked through, about 6 minutes.
3. Meanwhile, whisk oil, lemon zest, lemon juice, salt and pepper in a medium bowl. Reserve 1 tablespoon vinaigrette in a small bowl.
4. Place spinach in a colander and rinse under cold water. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. When hot, add handfuls of spinach (with water still clinging to it) to the pan and cook, stirring, until just wilted, 2 to 3 minutes. Drain the spinach and add to the medium bowl; toss to coat with the vinaigrette. Divide the spinach among 4 plates and top each portion with 3 scallops. Drizzle the scallops with the reserved vinaigrette.

Recipe from Eating Well

Maintain Your Energy Levels

Consuming protein is important while undergoing orthodontic treatment to maintain your energy while keeping bones and teeth strong. Prosciutto-wrapped scallops with spinach are a tasty appetizer or main dish recipe that contains a lot of protein from the scallops along with the thin pieces of ham.

Highly Nutritious Recipe

The soft pieces of scallops and prosciutto are gluten free and easy for you to chew while wearing ceramic or metal braces, and this recipe’s ingredients will not damage any wires or brackets inside your mouth. Replacing Missing Teeth If There Are Remaining Spaces After Treatment

child-476507_640

Missing teeth are a more common concern that most patients think. Many people who have missing teeth are concerned about how it will affect the way they present themselves to the public. However, there are also health reasons for replacing missing teeth. When you have gaps in your teeth, it can lead to problems with your gums and it can also be rather inconvenient when eating some types of foods. Not all missing teeth need to be replaced, and it really depends a lot on the individual circumstances surrounding the missing teeth.

The Importance of Straight Teeth

Whether you get orthodontic appliances applied as an adult or child, it’s important to people to maintain a healthy and effective smile. Especially in America, straight teeth indicate a certain status. Crooked and missing teeth erroneously indicate that the individual doesn’t take good care of their health.

There are also good health reasons for wanting a straighter smile. It can help prevent disease, promotes better gum health and makes it easier to care for teeth. Simply put, straight teeth are more functional than crooked teeth. So, what do you do when you’ve had braces and there are gaps between the teeth after treatment?

There are a few possible remedies. In some cases, a prosthetic implant may be warranted. With younger children and some adults, it may be necessary to leave the space to allow the teeth to adjust and move. Each situation has to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Evaluating Spaces Between the Teeth

It’s important to realize that spaces between the teeth don’t always need to be filled. It’s not completely uncommon for an adult to have a few teeth that are missing, and only a few of them need to be replaced. In some situations, filling the space between the teeth can be risky to the patient’s overall long-term health.

An adult that has small gaps between the teeth may not need to have the spaces filled if they pose no functional issue. There are remedies that can be used to correct the spacing, but they are not considered medically necessary procedures. If the space between the teeth is more than a few millimeters, then there can be a negative effect on the long-term health of the patient.

When there are large spaces between teeth, the gums are not as well protected. This leaves the gums vulnerable to damage. Over time, damaged gums may begin to recede. One specific issue is when the bone beneath the gum begins to get damaged because there isn’t anything there to anchor the bone. As the bone becomes weaker, the teeth may begin to wobble around. Tooth decay and loss may ensue.

Typically the best case scenario with large spaces, is that the teeth begin to shift. If you’ve had braces, this can negate the positive effects of the treatment.

Fixing the Spaces After Orthodontic Treatment

If you’ve recently had treatment with Invisalign or other orthodontic appliances, you’ll want to keep your teeth in good condition. A dental implant is often the best remedy to replace a missing tooth. This requires the tooth to be anchored directly to the jaw bone. The tooth then functions much like a normal tooth.

Other options that are not as ideal include a bridge or partial denture. These options tend to stand out, and they are more noticeable. They also may allow the possibility of additional bone atrophy. In some cases, this may be your only option. However, you should definitely visit with an orthodontist to find out what options are available to you. If the spaces are extremely small, you may even be able to use a composite resin filling to improve the aesthetics of the teeth.

If you need a remedy to replace a missing tooth and you haven’t yet straightened your teeth, all hope is not lost. One nice thing about Invisalign treatment is that even if you have a bridge or implant, you can still get treatment. The implant or bridge won’t be able to move, but all of the teeth around it can move. This is why it’s so important to consult with a competent orthodontist before you get any treatments to make sure you get the best possible treatment.

Your orthodontist may recommend getting Invisalign or other orthodontic appliances applied first, and then have a procedure to replace any missing teeth. This way, you can ensure that you get the best possible smile. This is important since once you get an implant for a missing tooth, that tooth can’t be moved. If the placement of a dental implant isn’t ideal, it can reduce your options for treatment.

Missing Teeth in Children

Children who have missing teeth after treatment is a pretty common occurrence, especially if the appliances were applied before all of their adult teeth have come in. There is a device that is very similar to a partial denture that can be used. The appliance is wired to the teeth. When the adult teeth begin to come in, the appliance can be removed. For children who have adult teeth that are missing, the procedures prescribed for adults are actually ideal. It really depends on the age of the children and the current condition of their teeth.
