You can be repair chipped teeth . As a result these and related problems can be referred by an orthodontist to a specialist who can address these problems in conjunction with orthodontic treatment.

Braces

In conclusion, moving teeth into proper alignment will enhance your smile in several ways. First, orthodontic treatment with braces will remove the physical and psychological discomfort of having teeth where they do not belong, giving you another reason to smile. Brilliant Smile Checklist 2016

How to Maintain Your Braces

maintain

How to Maintain Your Braces

Braces can make oral care difficult, but that doesn’t mean you should ignore it. In many ways, they make maintaining proper oral hygiene even more important. If you want to have a beautiful smile once your teeth are properly straightened and aligned. You will need to take the necessary measures to maintain your teeth and braces.

Proper brace maintenance should be discussed with your orthodontist. However, this guide can give you a quick, go-to resource for understanding the needs of your brace and your teeth.
While each brace is doing its job to put your teeth into the proper alignment, they can also make it difficult to follow an oral hygiene routine. As the brace has more hooks, curves, and corners than our teeth, food particles can get trapped more easily.

To properly maintain your braces, here are a few cleaning habits you should adopt:

Clean Often:

• Clean Often: You may be used to hearing that you should brush twice a day. During the tooth-straightening procedure, you may find that you need to brush more often. Because the food can become trapped more easily, you are at a higher risk of growing harmful bacteria. To be safe, you should try to brush after every time you eat. This can dislodge any food that has become trapped in a brace or wire. If you don’t have a toothbrush available, try rinsing with water.

Use The Right Brush:

• Use The Right Brush: You may think that a hard bristle toothbrush is best for cleaning but it can actually be damaging. Additionally, the stiffness of the brush bristles can make it difficult to really get under the wire or shape around the brace. Instead, choose a soft bristle brush that can form around each brace and move between the wires. You should be able to feel the bristles between your wires.

Floss:

• Floss: Flossing is important for everyone, but your wires can make it a little more difficult to properly floss. However, you shouldn’t stop flossing just because it is a little more difficult. In many ways, flossing is even more important because of how easily food can get trapped. If you’re really struggling to floss, talk to your orthodontist about special accessories that can make it easier. Floss threaders allow you to easily get between the wires or you can even use special floss that has a thicker end.

Use Mouthwash:

• Use Mouthwash: Mouthwash is recommended when trying to maintain oral hygiene. It can help deliver a punch of antibacterial power to your teeth and gums. Because it is so easy for food to be trapped in your teeth, mouthwash can help rinse that food away and kill any bacteria it may have caused. Mouthwash can also help relieve irritation and reduce swelling that can be caused by a brace or wire rubbing on your mouth or gums. Antibacterial properties can keep cuts or sores clean so that they can heal quickly and properly.

Avoid Certain Foods:

• Avoid Certain Foods: Cleaning our teeth properly isn’t the only thing we should do to keep each brace strong and intact. There are also some foods that you will want to avoid to ensure you have a beautiful smile when all the metal comes off. Foods to avoid include anything sweet or sugary, such as sodas or candies. Because the sugar has a better chance of getting stuck in your teeth, there is also a bigger chance that you will experience tooth decay. Sticky foods, like gum or caramel, should also be avoided because they can pull a brace from your tooth. Hard foods, like nuts or popcorn, can break your wires.

Eat Low Acidity Foods:

• Eat Low Acidity Foods: If you’re wondering what you can eat that won’t damage your brackets or wires, focus on foods with low acidity levels. These will not cause damage to your tooth enamel. Low acidity foods include eggs, milk, bananas and seafood. Vegetables, potatoes, and yogurt are also low acidity so they can be incorporated into your diet as much as you would like.

The Importance of Brace Maintenance

As you probably already know, undergoing a treatment to straighten your teeth can be expensive. But if you take proper care of your teeth, the beautiful smile you’ll have after you’re done will be well worth the money. However, if you don’t take care of your brackets and wires, you won’t get the smile you’re after. Or it will take longer to see your best results.

Don’t compromise a beautiful smile just because you’re feeling lazy. Ignoring your brushing or flossing for just one night allows tooth-damaging bacteria to grow. This can leave you with tooth decay or gum disease. While proper maintenance and oral hygiene can take a few minutes to complete, having a healthy smile that you can’t wait to show off will be worth it.

Discuss

Be sure to discuss the unique needs of your mouth, brackets, wires, and teeth. Because each individual is different and will have different components of their procedure, you may need to take additional steps to ensure they are properly maintained. Have your orthodontist walk you through the various steps of a proper cleaning and what else you should be doing at home to maintain your smile.

If you have questions about brackets, wires, or other teeth straightening procedures, contact the expert dental team at BeachBraces. As leaders in the orthodontics industry, we have helped individuals of all ages and will all different needs get the smile they have always dreamed of. .How to Maintain Your Braces

Can retainers fix a slight shift of teeth after braces?

retainers

An orthodontic patient’s most anticipated appointment day is probably the day that their braces are finally removed, and they are able to see the unencumbered results of the time and money that they have devoted to their teeth. While the excitement of seeing their new smile is justified, it is important for them to keep in mind that the treatment is not yet complete. They still need to make sure they continue with retainers.

After The Braces Are Removed

The process of teeth straightening doesn’t end with the removal of braces. As with any other diagnosis, you should follow the prescribed treatment plan to get the results that you want. In addition, there is a level of after-care for the teeth that has to be maintained in order to protect the investment that you have made.

After the removal of the braces, your orthodontist will want to evaluate how well the teeth have been aligned, possibly by taking a bite impression or an X-ray, if necessary. Thus, if the patient is a child or teenager, the teeth may be examined to determine if there has been a growth of wisdom teeth. If so, you may advised to have them removed as the emergence of the wisdom teeth could affect the alignment of the teeth that had been straightened.

Retainers

The natural shifting of teeth is inevitable as one grows into an adult and then ages. This is also true for teeth that have been straightened with braces. A retainer is an orthodontic device that is tailored-made for your teeth and mouth and that is used as a safeguard to maintain the alignment of the corrected teeth. They can be categorized as removable or fixed. Consequently each type of retainer has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Removable retainers can be removed and placed back into the mouth at will and requires some compliance on the part the patient in order to be used as prescribed by orthodontists. Finally, there are two types of removable retainers:

Removable

• Hawley – Accordingly, these retainers have a metal wire that runs across the front of your teeth and are attached to an acrylic piece that fits into the roof of your mouth. They tend to be the most-used type. You can have a creatively personalized retainer as they come in a variety of styles and colors. They will not prevent your teeth from touching naturally and can be adjusted to adhere to any change in teeth alignment. Furthermore, while they are durable and easy to clean, they can be very noticeable to others and can alter your speech when they are initially worn.

• Clear Plastic – These retainers are sometimes also referred to as vacuum-formed retainers. They are made of a clear plastic that is molded to fit the teeth and can appear almost invisible when worn. There are a few marked differences when compared to the Hawley retainers. They do not tend to last as long and prevent your teeth from touching naturally and cannot be adjusted.

Fixed

Fixed or permanent retainers are composed of a thin wire that runs across the back of the teeth where they are bonded or glued in place. They are invisible to others, but can make the flossing your teeth difficult. They can remain inside of the mouth indefinitely. In order to have them removed safely, you would have to see a professional.

Retainers FAQ

Are Retainers Able To Fix Shifts of Teeth?

Retainers are a vital part of oral care after the removal of braces. Consequently, they are used to ensure that the patient’s teeth remain straightened and in place. The muscles, bones, gums adjust to the new position of your teeth. If a retainer is not used as directed by the orthodontist the teeth return to their original positions and a loss of the investment that has been made into getting the smile that you wanted. This is particularly important with children and teenagers who have had their braces removed, as their bones are still growing.

If the shifting of the teeth is minimal, a retainer could be used to move the teeth back to how they were positioned when the braces were initially removed. Finally, the retainer must never be forced onto the teeth if it doesn’t fit. Consequently, if this is the case, the patient should contact their orthodontic specialist regarding corrective procedures.

How Long Should Retainers Be Worn?

The frequency and the length of time a retainer is worn after braces are removed varies from patient to patient. You should follow the instructions of your orthodontist.

You will need to wear the retainer all day, for the first few months. In the case of a removable retainer, as the structures around the teeth adjust to the new position of the teeth, you may be able to wear the retainer with less frequency. Your retainer, whether it is removable or fixed, is a permanent part of your long-term treatment plan for maintaining straight teeth. This plan could conceivably last for years.

Are Braces Painful?

Are Braces Painful?

Your orthodontist just told you that you need to get braces. Undoubtedly, you are feeling a little anxious. When your first learned that you needed some form of tooth-straightening device to improve your smile, it is likely that there were many questions that went through your mind. First and foremost, you may have asked, when am I going to be able to get these things off? You are also no doubt concerned about what the end results would be or how will your teeth look.

The Application of Teeth Straightening Appliances

After your initial consultation and after you have decided which teeth straightening device will be best for you, you will schedule an appointment to have your braces applied. During the placement process, you should feel little to no pain or discomfort.

Over the next few days, you will likely notice that it feels uncomfortable to eat. This is especially the case if you have had ceramic or metal brackets with wires and rubber bands installed. You’re going to have to change the way that you chew your food. You might experience some irritation on your gums and on your lips as you get accustomed to talking and chewing with bits of metal or ceramic in your mouth.

Most people will opt to eat softer foods like soup, yogurt, and ice cream for the first few days after they get the teeth straightening devices applied. Slowly, you will get used to having them in your mouth, and eating will no longer be uncomfortable.

Feeling Your Teeth Shift

An essential part of the teeth straightening process is forcing your teeth to realign. You are going to feel some pressure on your teeth caused by the metal wires and the elastic ligatures. The pain should not be so severe that you will require prescription painkillers. Usually, the discomfort can be addressed by using an over-the-counter product.

Some people have been able to relieve the irritation caused by the metal or the ceramic rubbing against the inside of their mouth by putting wax over the brackets. Your orthodontist will be able to give you more tips on how to minimize the discomfort you feel. The initial pressure of having your teeth realigned should subside within the first week.

Discomfort after Checkups

Periodically, you will have to return to the orthodontic office to have your dental appliances adjusted. These adjustments are key to making sure that your teeth are being aligned properly. In the days following these adjustments, you may experience some discomfort that is on par with what you experienced when you first had the appliances put on your teeth. However, this discomfort can be addressed by using over-the-counter painkillers.

Is Invisalign Painful?

The condition of your teeth may make you a candidate for teeth straightening processes that use plastic aligners as opposed to using metal brackets. If so, you may wonder if you will experience less pain using this procedure.

The truth is that regardless of the orthodontic treatment you use, there is going to be some pain or discomfort. Even though the process that Invisalign aligners use is different, the result is the same in that they adjust the position of your teeth. That being said, most patients who use plastic aligners to correct their teeth only feel a mild amount of discomfort throughout the treatment. The pain is usually the most severe during the first few days of wearing the dental aligner.

Patients describe the pain as a sense of pressure or tenderness. For some patients, the discomfort comes because of the way they are taking the aligners out of their mouth and putting them back in. They might irritate their gums and their teeth. Some have commented that it is a challenge to eat certain foods or drink certain beverage the first few days after the procedure because of the discomfort they feel.

No Pain No Gain

Most agree that the pain is manageable. One tip that can help you minimize the discomfort you feel while using plastic dental aligners, is to wait to put in a new aligner until you are about to go to sleep. This way, if there is any initial discomfort, you will likely not feel it because you are asleep, or you will have to deal with it when you wake up.

Discomfort is minimized by:

  • Using over-the-counter painkillers
  • Eating softer foods when your teeth and gums feel sore or tender
  • Using a cold compress for around 15 minutes two times a day
  • Sucking on ice cubes periodically throughout the day to minimize the discomfort

Avoid the temptation to remove your aligners because they feel uncomfortable. In order to work, the Invisalign aligners must be in your mouth for at least 20 hours a day. While they can be uncomfortable, you will get the best results only if you follow the instructions provided by your orthodontic professional and if you take steps to minimize the discomfort caused by the aligners.

So…

So, does having teeth straightening procedures hurt? Yes, they can generate some mild pain or discomfort. However, the pain and discomfort are only temporary and easily managed. The results that come from having a healthy straight smile are many. Improved self-confidence, an attractive appearance, and the ability to chew your food better is more than worth any discomfort you might feel.

When to see an orthodontist

Orthodontists sometimes see conditions in teeth that may give clues about the person’s health that other medical professionals might have missed. One example is celiac disease. This allergy to gluten can result in the decay of tooth enamel. It can also lead to canker sores in the mouth. However, there are more and more gluten-free ingredients and recipes available all the time, and as a result, celiac sufferers have more access than ever before to a gluten-free diet.

One of the things gluten-free eaters miss the most is sweets like cookies and cake because they are often made with flour. That is why a recipe for gluten-free Amaretti biscuits is such a treat for people with celiac.

Damage to teeth from celiac cannot be reversed, but it can be stopped, and there are a number of procedures that can improve the look of teeth if necessary. Although invisalign braces are not a treatment that an orthodontist might do to repair teeth damaged from celiac disease, anyone with a gluten allergy who cares enough about the condition and appearance of their teeth to wear braces will not want to damage them further. Recipes like gluten-free Amaretti biscuits can help prevent that damage.

These are a great treat to have with tea or coffee, and one of the best things about them is that they are naturally gluten-free. Too often, recipes that are normally made with wheat or other grains that are adapted to be gluten-free are disappointing by comparison. This is not the case with these delicious gluten-free Amaretti biscuits.

Whether or not you are dedicated to living gluten-free, you might be concerned about your own smile or those of your family members. If your own teeth or your children’s teeth look overcrowded or crooked, give us a call today to speak to an orthodontist about invisalign braces.

Crust

  • 5 cups cauliflower florets
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ¾ cup low-moisture part-skim shredded mozzarella cheese (3 oz)
  • ¼ cup shredded Parmesan cheese

Toppings

  • 2 plum (Roma) tomatoes, thinly sliced (at least 18 slices)
  • 6 oz fresh mozzarella cheese, cut into 6 slices
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 5 large fresh basil leaves, shredded

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 425°F. Line cookie sheet with cooking parchment paper; spray paper with cooking spray. Set aside.
  2. Place half of the cauliflower in food processor. Cover; process until very finely ground. Repeat with other half of cauliflower. Transfer to microwavable bowl. There should be about 3 cups of packed cauliflower.
  3. Microwave cauliflower uncovered on High 5 minutes. Meanwhile, place colander over a large bowl. Line colander with kitchen towel. Transfer microwaved cauliflower to towel; set aside to cool about 10 minutes or until cool enough to handle. Squeeze water from cauliflower by wrapping the towel around it and twisting. Remove as much liquid as possible. Set aside to cool 5 minutes.
  4. In medium bowl, beat egg, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon pepper and 3/4 cup mozzarella cheese with fork. Add cauliflower, and combine using hands, kneading mixture together. Discard any large bits of cauliflower.
  5. Sprinkle shredded Parmesan in 6 small mounds on cookie sheet. Divide dough into 6 equal balls; shape into hockey puck shapes. Place 1 piece of dough on top of each mound of Parmesan. Gently press out dough into discs, about 1/4 inch thick. Press together any ragged edges to prevent burning.
  6. Bake crust without toppings 20 to 25 minutes or until easy to turn; remove from oven, and use pancake turner to gently peel and release pizzas from parchment. Turn over pizzas, and top with 3 tomato slices per pizza, 1 slice fresh mozzarella, salt and pepper. Bake 8 minutes. Top with shredded basil.

Take Care of Your Teeth, Too

Being healthy doesn’t have to be boring; it can be fun. Here’s a tasty recipe for mini pizzas that will seem like a party and keep you hearty. These mini pizzas are completely gluten free–how do they do it? The crust is made from cauliflower and cheese, no gluten products at all. Also included in the crust are egg, salt, and black pepper. The toppings are tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, salt, black pepper, and fresh basil leaves. The ingredients are simple, healthy, and non-processed.

Another great way to be healthy is to care for your teeth. Be sure to visit the orthodontist to see if you need braces. Crowded teeth can lead to uneven wear, tooth decay, chipping, gum disease, and other problems. Braces can correct this and can even be invisible with invisalign.

Cook Tasty Pasta

Finding easy to chew foods after you begin to wear Invisalign aligners is a good plan because your mouth’s soft tissues may develop some sensitivity. A fast recipe to prepare is vegan rigatoni peperonata, and the tiny pieces of olives, bell peppers and onions combined with pasta and herbs helps to make this dish delicious.

Choose Nutritious Vegetables

An orthodontist will recommend that patients wearing braces continue to consume a lot of nutrients from brightly-colored vegetables. However, some patients find it difficult to chew hard foods right after beginning their orthodontic treatment. While becoming accustomed to having plastic aligners or metal wires on your teeth, choose meals that contain numerous minerals and vitamins.

Replacing Missing Teeth If There Are Remaining Spaces After Treatment

child-476507_640

Missing teeth are a more common concern that most patients think. Many people who have missing teeth are concerned about how it will affect the way they present themselves to the public. However, there are also health reasons for replacing missing teeth. When you have gaps in your teeth, it can lead to problems with your gums and it can also be rather inconvenient when eating some types of foods. Not all missing teeth need to be replaced, and it really depends a lot on the individual circumstances surrounding the missing teeth.

The Importance of Straight Teeth

Whether you get orthodontic appliances applied as an adult or child, it’s important to people to maintain a healthy and effective smile. Especially in America, straight teeth indicate a certain status. Crooked and missing teeth erroneously indicate that the individual doesn’t take good care of their health.

There are also good health reasons for wanting a straighter smile. It can help prevent disease, promotes better gum health and makes it easier to care for teeth. Simply put, straight teeth are more functional than crooked teeth. So, what do you do when you’ve had braces and there are gaps between the teeth after treatment?

There are a few possible remedies. In some cases, a prosthetic implant may be warranted. With younger children and some adults, it may be necessary to leave the space to allow the teeth to adjust and move. Each situation has to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Evaluating Spaces Between the Teeth

It’s important to realize that spaces between the teeth don’t always need to be filled. It’s not completely uncommon for an adult to have a few teeth that are missing, and only a few of them need to be replaced. In some situations, filling the space between the teeth can be risky to the patient’s overall long-term health.

An adult that has small gaps between the teeth may not need to have the spaces filled if they pose no functional issue. There are remedies that can be used to correct the spacing, but they are not considered medically necessary procedures. If the space between the teeth is more than a few millimeters, then there can be a negative effect on the long-term health of the patient.

When there are large spaces between teeth, the gums are not as well protected. This leaves the gums vulnerable to damage. Over time, damaged gums may begin to recede. One specific issue is when the bone beneath the gum begins to get damaged because there isn’t anything there to anchor the bone. As the bone becomes weaker, the teeth may begin to wobble around. Tooth decay and loss may ensue.

Typically the best case scenario with large spaces, is that the teeth begin to shift. If you’ve had braces, this can negate the positive effects of the treatment.

Fixing the Spaces After Orthodontic Treatment

If you’ve recently had treatment with Invisalign or other orthodontic appliances, you’ll want to keep your teeth in good condition. A dental implant is often the best remedy to replace a missing tooth. This requires the tooth to be anchored directly to the jaw bone. The tooth then functions much like a normal tooth.

Other options that are not as ideal include a bridge or partial denture. These options tend to stand out, and they are more noticeable. They also may allow the possibility of additional bone atrophy. In some cases, this may be your only option. However, you should definitely visit with an orthodontist to find out what options are available to you. If the spaces are extremely small, you may even be able to use a composite resin filling to improve the aesthetics of the teeth.

If you need a remedy to replace a missing tooth and you haven’t yet straightened your teeth, all hope is not lost. One nice thing about Invisalign treatment is that even if you have a bridge or implant, you can still get treatment. The implant or bridge won’t be able to move, but all of the teeth around it can move. This is why it’s so important to consult with a competent orthodontist before you get any treatments to make sure you get the best possible treatment.

Your orthodontist may recommend getting Invisalign or other orthodontic appliances applied first, and then have a procedure to replace any missing teeth. This way, you can ensure that you get the best possible smile. This is important since once you get an implant for a missing tooth, that tooth can’t be moved. If the placement of a dental implant isn’t ideal, it can reduce your options for treatment.

Missing Teeth in Children

Children who have missing teeth after treatment is a pretty common occurrence, especially if the appliances were applied before all of their adult teeth have come in. There is a device that is very similar to a partial denture that can be used. The appliance is wired to the teeth. When the adult teeth begin to come in, the appliance can be removed. For children who have adult teeth that are missing, the procedures prescribed for adults are actually ideal. It really depends on the age of the children and the current condition of their teeth.
