Toddlers Teeth Development

Can Pacifying Toddlers Harm the Development of Teeth?

The question of providing a pacifier for a crying baby continues to perplex parents even today. Some parents sidestep the problem in favor of thumb sucking, but this relinquishes control over the use of the comforting device. Many experts discourage the use of pacifiers because excessive use can affect the shape of the mouth and the normal eruption of adult teeth.

Pacifiers and Baby Teeth:

Many parents believe they don’t have to worry about baby teeth, but the loss of these teeth can affect the positioning of the adult teeth as they emerge. When the baby teeth are lost early, adult teeth may come in crooked, crowded or with over- or under-bites. These problems can be avoided with early intervention by a trained children’s orthodontist.

Problems Associated With Pacifier Use:
Experts warn that pacifier use after the age of three can cause a number of problems, such as:

  • Shifting or moving of upper teeth
  • Unattractive molding of facial structures
  • Increased risk of middle ear infections

Orthodontics For Children:

Orthodontics is a specialty field of dentistry that deals with problems of tooth alignment and dysfunction in mouth structures. Orthodontists are dental professionals that receive three additional years of training in the diagnosis and treatment of facial abnormalities and dental alignment. They analyze dental problems through the visual examination of mouth tissues and x-ray of the bones of the mouth and jaw. With this information, the orthodontist can then design a treatment program to restore teeth and jaws to full function. Orthodontics for children can help to improve eating ability to ensure good health and can increase self-esteem for better overall well being.

Types of Orthodontic Problem:

The use of pacifiers over a long period of time can cause tooth alignment problems or exacerbate problems that already exist in the facial structure.

  • Anteroposterior deviations are problems such as underbite and overbite that can impede proper speech and eating function.
  • Tooth overcrowding can occur when the jaw space is not large enough to accommodate that size of the adult teeth and can also occur when alignment is disrupted by actions such as using a pacifier.
  • Poor appearance can result when adult teeth do not fit the shape of the face or when teeth are positioned in an unattractive way.

If Your Child Needs Braces:

Straightening teeth may be done with a variety of devices, such as braces, headgear and retainers. Today, braces are made of a variety of materials to suit each orthodontic need, including stainless steel, plastic, ceramics and combinations of these materials. A highly trained and experienced children’s orthodontist will be able to determine the best type of device needed to correct your child’s dental problems.

If you have concerns about the affect of the use of pacifiers on your toddler’s teeth, make an appointment today at Beach Braces to discuss the problem and possible solutions with an experienced and caring children’s orthodontist.

National Teen Self-Esteem Month

May is National Teen Self-esteem Month

May is National Teen Self-esteem Month

National Teen Self-esteem Month is a time to recognize the importance of how young people feel about themselves and how their feelings can affect their physical and mental health. The teenage years are a time when a teen’s self-esteem needs to be nurtured and supported by family, friends and other necessary people in their lives.

What is self-esteem?

The National Association for Self-Esteem defines self-esteem as “The experience of being capable of meeting life’s challenges and being worthy of happiness.” Yet many teens find it difficult to meet these goals because of various hurdles.

For example, bullying (both in person and cyberbullying) is a serious problem among teenagers. Teens’ peers can say and write cruel, untrue things. Teen self-esteem can rapidly erode, and the result can be depression, eating disorders, drop in grades, truancy, drug and alcohol use and even suicide.

However, parents and other caring individuals can help teenagers meet these hurdles head on. Concerned individuals who want to know how to increase teenager self-esteem need to identify the factors that are bothering a young person, recognize the impact it has on the adolescent and then offer guidance in a cooperative manner.

Tips on how to raise self-esteem:

If you are a teen who is experiencing self-esteem issues or a concerned adult who is concerned about a teen’s self-esteem, here are some tips.

Acknowledge how body image affects your self-esteem. Lots of pressure is placed on teenagers to look a certain way, and typically those expectations are not realistic. Teens who have problems with body image could benefit from talking with someone they trust about their concerns.

Banish the negative. Teens who say negative things about themselves (e.g., I’m too fat, I’m not popular) or who listen to others who say such things need to replace the negative words with positive ones. Whenever negative thoughts or words occur, teens should replace them immediately with positive thoughts (e.g., I am great at math, I enjoy playing the trumpet).

Squash comparisons. When people compare themselves to others, they will always find someone who is better and worse at something than they are. Playing the comparison game is a waste of time and energy. Teens should be encouraged to celebrate who they are as unique beings who can make choices that will lead them on a path of personal fulfillment.

Smile. A smile communicates confidence and a great smile can make people feel on top of their game. Teens who don’t feel good about their smile can talk to their parents about what can be done to give them that extra boost of confidence.

National Teen Self-esteem Month is about many things, and one of them is how to increase teenager self-esteem in effective ways. Dr. Patricia J. Panucci, DMD, MS, and other folks at Beach Braces in Manhattan Beach can help put a smile on the face of your teenager. Give us a call today.

Smile Quote # 30: “A Smile is like A Tight Underwear – It Makes your Cheeks Go up.”

A lot of things can make a smile and it’s true that we all smile in very different ways but ultimately the best smiles are the ones that make their cheeks go all the way up and expose our beautiful teeth. The best part about sharing one of these big toothy grins was someone else is that most of the time it’s returned which can make your smile last even longer.

With a smile on our face we can appear much sexier and much more approachable. Just as a nice outfit or nice underwear might make us feel more confident, in many cases all we need to boost our confidence is a great smile. Our smile is perhaps one of the best weapons that we can use when it comes to meeting new people and gaining acceptance in many social situations. You should never be afraid to hide your smile and should always embrace showing off a great big smile whenever you can.

For many people however, it can be very difficult to show off this big smile and to let their cheeks go up and expose their teeth whenever they want to share a smile with others. Without having the ability to show off their smile people may not know just how much of life that they might be missing out on. A smile is an unspoken communication device and if you are afraid to use it, you never know the types of connections that you might be missing.

If you need help restoring confidence in your smile contact the experts at Dr. Patricia Panucci’s Beach Braces. The team can assess your situation and provide you with treatment options to suit your lifestyle and condition. You could be showing off a brand-new confident smile in no time with the help of the team in Manhattan Beach.

Invisalign v Braces

What are The Five C’s? [Of Invisalign & Invisalign Teen]

Invisalign is a revolutionary new orthodontic treatment that allows patients to straighten their teeth without the use of traditional metal braces. Whilst traditional metal braces have worked and evolved for decades to include increased comfort, shorter treatment times and more fine-tuned adjustments, Invisalign is really the next step in orthodontic treatment that many adults and teens are interested in receiving for convenience.

Invisalign FAQ

Seven Invisalign FAQ’s

Invisalign FAQ’s

Invisalign straightens your teeth without wires and brackets, using a series of clear, customized, removable appliances called aligners. It’s virtually undetectable, which means hardly anyone will know that you’re straightening your teeth. These are some common FAQs for new patient wearing Invisalign.

Invisalign FAQ

1. What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic appliance that works similarly to braces and is completely removable. Invisalign is created using nearly invisible dental aligners made of thermoplastic. The aligners look very similar to teeth whitening trays that you may use it the dentist or you may have purchased from your local drugstore. As you progress through Invisalign treatments you will need to change these aligners to gradually adjust your teeth into the position for your ideal smile.

2. How do the aligners work?

Over time you will need to change out the aligners to move your teeth into their correct position. The aligners will put a controlled force on teeth to slowly move them into their position. Orthodontists will map out these forces and dictate how aligners should be adjusted to properly adjust your teeth. Over the length of your treatment your teeth will gradually move as you change each aligner until they are eventually formed into their correct structure.

3. How would Invisalign treatment affect me?

Unlike braces and some other forms of traditional orthodontic appliances, Invisalign is completely removable. Patients are only required to wear Invisalign for 20-22 hours a day for the best results. Removing the aligners to eat or drink means that you are not restricted in the types of food that you would regularly eat and you will also have no difficulties cleaning your teeth. The best part is the aligners are virtually invisible so it will be very difficult for anyone to know that you are undergoing orthodontic treatment. Invisalign may be a bit uncomfortable for the first few days that you wear the aligners, but after that they have a minimal effect on your life.

Invisalign vs braces

4. Do I need to take care of my aligners?

You will need to clean your aligners regularly. You can do this by both brushing them as you would your teeth and rinsing them with lukewarm water, or looking into the specialty Invisalign cleaning system. Changing  your aligners whenever your orthodontist recommends is also required as part of your treatment.

5. How long does the treatment take?

Treatment will depend on how severe your individual case is. The average amount of time that the aligners are used is around 12 months for adults. Your orthodontist will be able to give you an indication of the amount of time your treatment may take but ultimately the deciding factor will be how well you personally adjust to treatment with the aligners.

6. How often will I need to schedule appointments?

Invisalign will require less appointments than with traditional braces but you should still see your orthodontist at least once every 4 to 6 weeks to track your progress.

7. How much does Invisalign cost?

Only your individual orthodontist will be able to determine the full cost of Invisalign. It depends on the amount of treatment that you need individually and the number of aligners that you might need to complete your treatment. Some of the factors on pricing include: The area that you live in, the difficulty of your case and the amount of orthodontic insurance coverage you may have. The national average for the cost of Invisalign treatment in the United States is around $5000.

Can you Play Sports with Braces?

Playing Sports and Invisalign

Many parents have voiced their concern about their kids wearing orthodontic braces and participating in physical activities. Dr. Panucci assures us that wearing braces should not deter a child from participating in sports.

There are a few precautions that children wearing braces should take if they are participating in full contact sports.  They need to make sure they are wearing protective mouth guards.

There is the alternative of bubble wrapping your child, although it’s not highly recommended, watch the hilarious how to do video below:

Bubblewrap – Year Round

Invisalign is an excellent choice for active teens. Invisalign Teen gives you the benefits of straighter teeth without the hassle of metal braces. Because Invisalign is removable, the plastic aligners pop out very easily before heading out to the field or participating in other contact sports.

Whether you have Invisalign braces or conventional braces don’t let them stop you from participating in contact sports.

Beach Braces Smile Quote  #3

It’s often said when you smile everyone smiles with you, this is so true. It’s amazing what a difference a smile can make when you walk into a room full of new people, or when you’re simply passing someone in the street. Smiling automatically puts everyone at ease and often leads to further social interaction.

Let’s face it being smiled at makes you feel good, so next time when you see someone feeling a bit flat, and give them a big smile! It’s free and effortless.

Did you ever stop to think smiling is one of the few universal signs that everyone can understand and appreciate. If you thought it was a nod or shake of the head, think again! In Bulgaria and India theses actions have a completely different meaning.

Who smiles the most ?

Thailand dubbed “Smileland” by many probably do it the best and for good reason, numerous research projects have proven that smiling actually reduces stress and boosts the immune system.

Smiles can vary we have the classic “obligatory smile” well he/she smiled at me I better smile back, then we have the “false smile” hmmm never goes down well and there easily detected. Finally we have the “genuine smile” which is a complete crowd pleaser.

So why don’t people smile more? Sadly a large percentage of people don’t feel comfortable with either the colour of alignment of their teeth. Don’t live life not smiling Dr. Panucci at Beach Braces based in Manhattan Beach offers a wide range of treatments for both children and adults. If you are concerned that you may be a bit mature for the “braces look” you can read here about Invisalign here.

Keep smiling people!!
