Baby Teeth vs. Permanent Teeth

Should I have a Baby Tooth Removed if a Permanent Tooth is Present?

When That Baby Tooth Keeps Hanging Around

If you have a baby tooth that refuses to fall out for your child, it can be a nuisance. This especially holds true when the permanent tooth comes in and that other tooth is still hanging in there. In addition to cosmetic reasons, you may have concerns about overcrowding in your child’s mouth if the tooth is left in place. Before you make any hasty decisions or jump to conclusions about braces, pay a visit to your dentist first to find some answers.

Baby Teeth Can Become a Problem

When your dentist evaluates your child’s situation, a thorough examination comes first. From that point, it will be important to determine why the permanent tooth is coming in and the primary tooth is still in place. This generally occurs as a result of a spacing or crowding issue. When both types of teeth are in place, your dentist will generally recommend removal of the baby tooth. However, this is not going to solve any orthodontic issues that have occurred. It will make it easier for your child to have good oral hygiene as it becomes easier to clean permanent teeth. It is important to keep your child’s gums and teeth healthy. Once the baby tooth has been removed, your dentist is likely to refer you to an orthodontist.

Dealing with Overcrowding or Improper Alignment of Your Child’s Teeth

When your child has primary teeth present at the same time as permanent teeth, there is likely to be an underlying, orthodontic issue. The only way to determine if this is the case you have to go beyond your dentist’s office. A referral to an orthodontist can help you to answer any questions and determine what will be the best course of action. Beach Braces may be the answer for you. The younger your child is when issues are identified, the easier it will be to handle any problems with his or her teeth. From tooth removal to the use of retainers or braces, there are many options that could bring your child’s teeth into proper alignment. The main goal is to bring out that beautiful smile and help your child to have healthy, strong teeth.

Celebrity’s Orthodontic Journey # 2: Tom Cruise

Think you’re too old for braces? Ask Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise. The star of Top Gun, Jerry Maguire, and Edge of Tomorrow, who was 39 years old when he first ventured into the orthodontist’s office! After appearing on magazine covers for nearly two decades–with a crooked smile–he finally took the plunge when one of his own children needed to get braces, and decided he would join in as well! As every magazine photo and movie of him since 2002 testifies: the rest is history.

Instead of the image of wires and rubber bands many of us have when we think about braces, Tom opted for a more discrete ceramic type, the only visible part of which was a thin wire running across the front of his teeth. He wore them for about eighteen months, and was able to have the wire removed when he was doing a movie, then put back on after. In fact, many adults, like Tom, choose ceramic braces, but if those are too obtrusive, there are also clear aligners that are nearly invisible! Or maybe you’re interested in getting Wildsmile braces, metal braces emblazoned with charms and colors? We work with you to choose a style of braces that meets your specific health needs, while also fitting your personal or professional lifestyle.

Even if you’re not planning to walk down the red carpet anytime soon, straightening your teeth is a great way to improve your smile and boost your self-confidence. What are you waiting for? Come on in for a consultation with Dr. Patricia at Beach Braces today. She is a cutting-edge orthodontist, and one of the most qualified in Southern California. More importantly, she is dedicated to finding the right choice for you, so that you can love your braces before and after.

Solutions for Off-Centered Teeth

How Do I Fix Off-centered Teeth?

Beach Braces

Photo Credit: Pensiero via Compfight cc

While procedures for fixing off-centered teeth are traditionally thought of as procedures for children and teenagers, an increasing number of adults are seeking an orthodontist’s help in order to improve their smile. Improvements in cosmetic dentistry have allowed orthodontists to offer a greater number of options to adults who wish to fix their off-center smiles through the use of braces for adults. If you’re unhappy with your smile, being an adult actually increases the orthodontic options available to help you achieve the perfect teeth of your dreams.

Metal Braces

The traditional metal braces are composed of metal brackets and wires. These types of braces are usually chosen because they are the least expensive type, but they are not typically preferred by adults because they are the most noticeable and less than ideal if you are working in a professional environment.

Ceramic Braces

Although ceramic braces are similar to metal braces, they are not as noticeable. This is due to the fact that ceramic braces come with clear or tooth-colored brackets. These brackets are designed to blend in and not be noticeable. These types of braces are typically preferred because they are capable of moving teeth faster than other options. However, these options can stain easily.

Lingual Braces

In-Ovation L (lingual) Minor Tooth Movement is an orthodontic procedure that places the brackets behind your teeth. This orthodontic treatment focuses on the six upper and the six lower front teeth. There are no removable braces and you will not have to remove any trays. You will be free to eat, converse, and interact with others without anyone ever seeing your braces. Lingual braces are preferred because a difference is typically noticeable within 12 to 24 weeks. Additionally, fewer office visits are required with Lingual braces.

Invisalign

This procedure uses clear, removable, and customized aligners instead of brackets or wires. This technology requires an initial office visit to see if Invisalign will work for your teeth. If you are a candidate for the procedure, Invisalign’s advanced computer technology will design specific aligners calibrated exactly for your teeth. These are typically worn for two weeks until they are replaced with a new set. Using Invisalign with Acceledent may reduce the overall treatment time required to have perfectly straight teeth. The aligners must be taken out when eating, brushing, and flossing. Invisalign can only be provided by orthodontists who have received training and certification from Align Technology. Invisalign are an option for braces for adults only and cannot be used for children.
A qualified orthodontist should be able to help you decide which type of braces are right for you and your lifestyle. Fortunately, as part of her role as the best orthodontist in Los Angeles, Dr. Patricia J. Panucci has experience in providing orthodontic treatment for adults who need to fix their off-centered teeth. Contact her office at Beach Braces today to begin your journey towards the smile you’ve always wanted.

Fruit Juices; The Real Story

Teeth staining foods, orthodontic specialist Manhattan Beach, Beach Braces

Teeth Staining Food No. 10: Does Fruit Juice Damage Your Teeth?

America is full of parents trying to feed their kids the right things and make healthy decisions for your children. When you have a choice between handing over a glass of grape juice or a can of soda, the decision seems easy. Fruit juice is healthier and does better for your kids, or so you might think. The truth is that fruit juice, especially darker juices like cranberry and grape, can do just as much damage as soda.

Why are Fruit Juices so Bad?

Fruit juices often contain a high amount of calories, and some of the more popular juice blends contain less than 10 percent real fruit juice. If you have a few extra pounds around your midsection and can’t figure out why, the juices you drink might be the culprit. While an orthodontist can’t help you get rid of those extra pounds, but he can surely help you get back your smile. Teeth whitening is a process that takes place over the course of several weeks or months. It can lighten yellow spots and other discolorations and make you proud to smile again. Professional teeth cleaning and whitening products work much more effectively than the products you use at home do.

Looking for an Orthodontist?

When it comes to finding an orthodontist specialist, patients often keep putting off the process until it’s too late or they require much more expensive procedures. Patrica J. Panucci, DMD and MS, believes that everyone should love to smile. Her local practice at Beach Braces provides residents with services ranging from teeth whitening to invisible braces. Whether you need Invisalign, affordable braces, teeth whitening or other procedures, find out how Dr. Panucci can assist you. Call us to make your first appointment with the doctor today.

Sticky Candies: Extremely, Dangerously Sticky

Beach Braces, teeth stainingTeeth Staining Food # 7: Candy, Sweets and Chewing Gums:

Let’s face it: A life without candy, sweets and gum would be awfully dull. However, most people regret their tasty little indulgences once they find themselves in the dentist’s chair. While dentists’ first priority might be the health of your teeth, they’re still people, and they understand that no one wants to completely sacrifice sweets. Here are some tips on how you can include candy and sweets in your diet while preserving your healthy white smile.

Brush After Eating – Most people know that they are supposed to always brush after eating. However, many people interpret this to mean that they need to brush after breakfast, lunch and dinner. In reality, you need to brush after every time you eat, even if it’s just a quick bite of chocolate in the afternoon. Even a little bit of sugar can cause a cavity if allowed to sit on your teeth.

Avoid Caramels and Sticky Candies – While the occasional sticky candy, such as caramel, is alright, you generally want to avoid these sticky candy items. If you have braces, you should really go out of your way to find candies that aren’t particularly sticky or thick to enjoy. Sticky candies can get caught in orthodontia and cause damage to your braces over time.

When it comes to candy and dental health, moderation is key. A diet heavy in sweets will be damaging, but a few candy indulgences once in a while won’t do severe harm, as long as you always remember to brush after eating them.

Get White Teeth without Giving up Your Favorite Berries

Beach bracesTeeth Staining Food # 5: Vibrantly Colored Fruits like, Blueberries, Blackberries, Cherries, Pomegranates.

When summer comes, you just can’t wait to dive into a container of fresh berries. You might head to one of the farmers markets or go right to the source and pick the berries yourself. Fruits with a vibrant color, including blackberries, cherries, blueberries and pomegranates are refreshing and a healthier alternative to a bag of chips or a candy bar. If you eat a large amount of those fruits though, you’ll notice that the color seems to remain behind on your teeth.

Teeth Whitening:

Teeth whitening, also called teeth bleaching, is a dental procedure that removes stains caused by coffee, tea, soda, fruits and other foods. Over the counter products let you remove stains at home, and include toothpaste, gels and whitening strips. Those products often contain a small amount of peroxide, but using peroxide on your teeth can eventually break down the enamel. In-office procedures are generally safer and more effective. Many offices use light therapy, but other offices use bleaching agents that can increase the whiteness of your teeth in several sessions.

Beach Braces, Orthodontics

Acceledent: Accelerating Orthodontic Procedures

Acceledent – Faster and More Comfortable Orthodontic Treatment

Beach Braces, OrthodonticsBraces are able to straighten teeth by the application of force as a means of realigning them gradually by a reshaping of the surrounding bone. How long it takes for this procedure to complete will differ greatly depending on the person. However, it usually takes more than a year. As a way of making this process go faster, OrthoAccell Technologies has created the AcceleDent system. Vibration is utilized by the appliance, speeding up the process dramatically. It is an appliance that is non-invasive and removable. A person will wear the appliance in his or her mouth for only 20 minutes each day. Since the process of straightening the teeth has been cut down considerably with this appliance, it is perfect for making 6 month smiles. The appliance is completely FDA approved, so you can be rest assured that it has been thoroughly tested and is safe for you or your children to use.

Clinical trial:

AcceleDent was the subject of a randomized clinical trial that proved beyond the shadow of a doubt how effective the appliance is when it comes to accelerating the process of straightening teeth. In the trial, the appliance increased the movement of teeth by 106 percent during the phase of initial alignment and between 38 and 50 percent during closure of extraction space. The study did not reveal any signs of teeth roots being damaged or other problems that might have been caused by the appliance.

Many years in development:

The increased rate of tooth movement that the study revealed basically means that the time a patient undergoes orthodontic treatment can be shortened by a minimum of five months during the initial two stages of the treatment. The science that this appliance uses took years of research to successfully develop. Dr. Jeremy Mao, Professor of Orthodontics at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, is one of the people responsible for the device’s creation. His work was critical in understanding the therapeutic effect that pulsatile forces can have in the acceleration of bone modeling.

How does Acceledent work?

Patented SoftPulse Technology applies micropulses that are specifically calibrated for each individual patient. These micropulses will gently cause the acceleration of teeth movement. The direction your teeth are going will be monitored by your orthodontist during the entire process. Conventional orthodontic treatment is perfectly complimented by the safe and gentle acceleration of the process of bone remodeling. The SoftPulse Technology micropulses are made to exert up to eight times less force than that of an electric toothbrush. This will make your orthodontic treatment process much easier than if you were wearing traditional braces.

Pursuing a Career as an Orthodontist

How to Become An Orthodontist Specialist:

A career as an orthodontist is a great choice. An orthodontist is a specialist in dentistry who understands how to straighten teeth. An orthodontist also uses devices to readjust teeth, such as braces. Because advanced skills are needed to become an orthodontist, several years of training is required. An undergraduate program is also required; students must spend two to four years studying at a school. Dental school classes are needed too. Students must spend four years in dental school. After dental school is completed, students must attend a postgraduate orthodontics program. The program lasts two to three years.

Step One – Undergraduate Details And Dental School:

Students must finish the pre-dental requirements before they can train to be orthodontists. Many dental programs only admit individuals who have a bachelor’s degree. However, there are a few programs that accept individuals who have a limited undergraduate education.

There are a few required pre-dental courses that students must take. The courses are biology, physics, chemistry, and several other courses. Students can major in whatever subject they choose. Though, because students must take science courses, most individuals choose chemistry and biology. However, all students must take the Dental Admission Test when applying for dental school. The American Dental Association provides the test.

Step Two – Graduate:

Most dental programs last for about four years. After students graduate, they get a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree. During the first few years of school, students spend a lot of time taking physiology courses, microbiology courses, biochemistry courses, and anatomy courses. During the last two years, students spend time with licensed dentists.

Step Three – Finish Postgraduate Orthodontics Classes:

After the dental program is complete, students must apply for orthodontic programs. Most students use a Postdoctoral Application Support Service to apply for the programs. Orthodontic programs last a few years. During this time, students gain knowledge that is helpful, such as tooth movement. Students may also receive training depending on the program.

Step Four – Board Certification:

After the training requirements are completed, students usually earn board certification. The certification displays a student’s skill and knowledge in orthodontics. Students who pass a clinical exam can gain certification from the American Board of Orthodontics. Students can take the exam after completing the postgraduate orthodontic program.

Step Five – Getting Licensed:

Orthodontist specialists must have a license. The state regulates the licensing requirements. In most cases, graduating from an established school is a requirement. Students who want to practice a specialty must finish a postgraduate program. In many states, a license lets individuals provide orthodontic and dentistry services.

When students finish school, the pursue careers at established locations, such as Beach Braces. Board certified American Association of Orthodontists companies provide the best services.

Teeth Staining Food # 3: Sports Drinks

If you lead an active lifestyle, then you probably love to cool off and re-energize with a refreshing sports drink. However, these popular sports drinks in eye-catching colors are often enjoyed at the expense of your teeth. Over time, these vibrant blue and green drinks can begin to stain and discolor your teeth.

Can you enjoy sports drinks without damaging your smile? It is possible, if you follow some basic guidelines. Here are some tips on how to enjoy refreshing sports drinks without ruining your beautiful smile.

Opt For Lighter Colors When Possible – Try to always pick sports drinks in lighter colors. They pose less of a risk to your smile. If you drink these sports drinks for their electrolytes, consider making the switch to coconut water. This clear and all-natural beverage has the same benefits as popular sports drinks, but poses no more of a threat to your smile than water, which is to say that they will cause absolutely no discoloration.

Always Brush After Drinking – Most people only make the effort to brush after a big meal. However, beverages can pose just as much risk to your teeth as food, if not more in some instances. If you need to drink a colored sports beverage, always remember to brush after you’re done. This will reduce the risk of discoloration to your teeth.

Those Fancy Sauces are doing more Harm than Good

Teeth Staining Food # 2: Deeply-Colored Sauces like Soya Sauce, Tomato Sauce etc.

You can brush your teeth all you want, use mouthwash multiple times a day, even use hydrogen peroxide, but those discolorations and stains on your teeth won’t go away. Did you know that the foods you eat can cause stains to appear on your teeth? Dark and deeply-colored sauces are among the worst foods that you can eat. Something as simple as spaghetti sauce can change the way you look and feel about your smile.

Acidity and Stains:

Spaghetti sauce, ketchup and other sauces and condiments contain tomatoes, which have a high acidity level. The more you eat those foods, the more the acidity breaks through the enamel on your teeth. This can lead to cavities and other dental conditions, but it can also cause those sauces to discolor your teeth. Soya sauce, also known as soy sauce is a popular addition to Asian dishes but before you add a dash to your next stir fry, think about how it can change your smile.

Healthy Eating:

As a parent, you want your kids to eat healthy. Feeding them the wrong things can lead to a trip to a teeth whitening orthodontist in Manhattan Beach. Even if you take the time to think about what to feed your children and spend hours planning meals, you might still feed your kids pasta sauces and Asian dishes that cause discoloration, decay of the enamel on their teeth and even cavities. It’s important that you take care of your kids’ dental hygiene as early as possible. For affordable dental braces in Manhattan Beach residents often call on Dr. Patricia J. Panucci for help. As a preferred Invisalign provider Manhattan Beach residents know that she can give their kids a brighter and straighter smile. Schedule your appointment with the orthodontist at Beach Braces today.
