VIRTUAL Orthodontic Visits Now Available in Manhattan Beach

VIRTUAL Orthodontic Visits Now Available!

We won’t be physically open, but we’re still here for you.

Last week, we sent an email stating our commitment to keeping our patients safe and healthy while our community, and the world in general, does its best to deal with COVID-19.

It was heartbreaking walking out of the office last Friday night, seeing the clinic so empty, knowing it will be at least 4 weeks before we return to treat patients in person. We feel confident we are making the right decision to help protect the community and our team, but it is hard to say goodbye, even for a brief time.

The amazing news in all of this, is that we have a plan for virtual visits.  Patients can use their smart phone, tablet or computer for the session.  While we cannot do our hands-on care, Dr. Panucci can expertly assess how you are progressing, observe your hygiene and monitor aligner/elastic/appliance wear.  Dr. Panucci will give you recommendations on how to modify and/or progress your orthodontic treatment.  Please download the ZOOM app on your phone or visit https://zoom.us/ to have access to your virtual appointment. We will be calling patients this week to schedule these.

If you are experiencing an orthodontic emergency, please visit our website www.beachbraces.org and follow the instructions in the pop-up box “Start Virtual Appointment.”  This explains how to take your photos properly so that Dr. Panucci may assess your condition.

In the meantime, be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram as we will continue to send out updates on all our platforms.

Just some reminders:

  • The front desk will be closed, so all calls will go to our voicemail.  We will still be checking our voicemail for urgent messages daily, and will get back to patients in a timely manner, if required.
  • Emails will still be received at the following addresses, and checked daily:

drpanucci@beachbraces.org – For any treatment-related questions and to schedule a Virtual orthodontic appointment

treatment@beachbraces.org – For all appointment questions and inquiries

Thank you so much for your patience and understanding during this unprecedented time.  Our thoughts are with all of our patients and your families.  We will get through this, and we will be back in person as soon as it is safely possible.

Sincerely,

Dr. Patti Panucci and the Beach Braces Team

When to see an orthodontist

Orthodontists sometimes see conditions in teeth that may give clues about the person’s health that other medical professionals might have missed. One example is celiac disease. This allergy to gluten can result in the decay of tooth enamel. It can also lead to canker sores in the mouth. However, there are more and more gluten-free ingredients and recipes available all the time, and as a result, celiac sufferers have more access than ever before to a gluten-free diet.

One of the things gluten-free eaters miss the most is sweets like cookies and cake because they are often made with flour. That is why a recipe for gluten-free Amaretti biscuits is such a treat for people with celiac.

Damage to teeth from celiac cannot be reversed, but it can be stopped, and there are a number of procedures that can improve the look of teeth if necessary. Although invisalign braces are not a treatment that an orthodontist might do to repair teeth damaged from celiac disease, anyone with a gluten allergy who cares enough about the condition and appearance of their teeth to wear braces will not want to damage them further. Recipes like gluten-free Amaretti biscuits can help prevent that damage.

These are a great treat to have with tea or coffee, and one of the best things about them is that they are naturally gluten-free. Too often, recipes that are normally made with wheat or other grains that are adapted to be gluten-free are disappointing by comparison. This is not the case with these delicious gluten-free Amaretti biscuits.

Whether or not you are dedicated to living gluten-free, you might be concerned about your own smile or those of your family members. If your own teeth or your children’s teeth look overcrowded or crooked, give us a call today to speak to an orthodontist about invisalign braces.

Recipe from Eating Well

Choose Healthy Salads for Meals

If you must avoid foods with gluten, then learn to make delicious salads that are made with chicken and fruit. Combining these two ingredients might seem unusual at first, but this type of recipe is a powerhouse of nutrition. More importantly, if you wear braces, then the small pieces of fruit and chopped chicken are easy to chew, and this is also a gluten-free recipe. An orthodontist knows that their patients’ have sensitive gums when they begin to wear Invisalign aligners or other orthodontia, and soft foods are recommended to avoid discomfort.

Consume Protein and Vitamins

It is also vitally important to consume protein to remain energetic along with getting enough minerals and vitamins to keep your bones and teeth strong. A gluten-free chicken and fruit salad is simple to pack for lunches at school, and your child will enjoy this recipe. When you visit an orthodontist for an examination, they will use a state-of-the-art computer software system to collect images of your facial structure. With this software, an orthodontic specialist can show you what will happen to your teeth if you choose to wear braces or Invisalign aligners.

smile

An honest smile is an icebreaker

smile

When you meet a stranger at work or out in public, an honest smile is an icebreaker. A smile is the universal greeting around the world to say hello to someone. It doesn’t matter if you are at a job interview or social event, just flashing a beautiful smile can open the door to a new career or friendship. If you have a perfect smile, then there is a good chance that you visited an orthodontist as a teenager for treatment. However, when an adult missed out on wearing braces as a teenager, it is still possible to have teeth straightened to improve a smile.

Choose Clear Plastic Aligners

There are several orthodontic treatments available today to reduce malocclusions of the teeth, including Invisalign aligners that are easy to wear each day and remove for oral hygiene. When you are approved to wear Invisalign to repair gaps between your teeth, an orthodontist uses three-dimensional images to create up to 25 sets of aligners in slightly different configurations. By wearing the aligners in the correct order, you will have an improved smile line in six months to one year without needing to have metal wires and brackets fastened to your teeth.

If you live in or near Manhattan Beach, Calif., then it is easy to find a fantastic orthodontist at Beach Braces to learn more about the different treatments available to create an honest smile. Dr. Patricia J. Panucci is available for examinations at her orthodontic facility to help patients have an attractive smile with these types of braces:

• Clear
• Lingual
• Self-ligating
• Wild smile
• Invisalign

Dr. Patricia J. Panucci provides orthodontic care for children, teenagers and adults who want to have a gorgeous smile that is an icebreaker anywhere they go. To schedule an appointment, patients can call 310-379-0066.

May is National Teen Self-esteem Month

National Teen Self-Esteem Month

May is National Teen Self-esteem Month

May is National Teen Self-esteem Month

National Teen Self-esteem Month is a time to recognize the importance of how young people feel about themselves and how their feelings can affect their physical and mental health. The teenage years are a time when a teen’s self-esteem needs to be nurtured and supported by family, friends and other necessary people in their lives.

What is self-esteem?

The National Association for Self-Esteem defines self-esteem as “The experience of being capable of meeting life’s challenges and being worthy of happiness.” Yet many teens find it difficult to meet these goals because of various hurdles.

For example, bullying (both in person and cyberbullying) is a serious problem among teenagers. Teens’ peers can say and write cruel, untrue things. Teen self-esteem can rapidly erode, and the result can be depression, eating disorders, drop in grades, truancy, drug and alcohol use and even suicide.

However, parents and other caring individuals can help teenagers meet these hurdles head on. Concerned individuals who want to know how to increase teenager self-esteem need to identify the factors that are bothering a young person, recognize the impact it has on the adolescent and then offer guidance in a cooperative manner.

Tips on how to raise self-esteem:

If you are a teen who is experiencing self-esteem issues or a concerned adult who is concerned about a teen’s self-esteem, here are some tips.

Acknowledge how body image affects your self-esteem. Lots of pressure is placed on teenagers to look a certain way, and typically those expectations are not realistic. Teens who have problems with body image could benefit from talking with someone they trust about their concerns.

Banish the negative. Teens who say negative things about themselves (e.g., I’m too fat, I’m not popular) or who listen to others who say such things need to replace the negative words with positive ones. Whenever negative thoughts or words occur, teens should replace them immediately with positive thoughts (e.g., I am great at math, I enjoy playing the trumpet).

Squash comparisons. When people compare themselves to others, they will always find someone who is better and worse at something than they are. Playing the comparison game is a waste of time and energy. Teens should be encouraged to celebrate who they are as unique beings who can make choices that will lead them on a path of personal fulfillment.

Smile. A smile communicates confidence and a great smile can make people feel on top of their game. Teens who don’t feel good about their smile can talk to their parents about what can be done to give them that extra boost of confidence.

National Teen Self-esteem Month is about many things, and one of them is how to increase teenager self-esteem in effective ways. Dr. Patricia J. Panucci, DMD, MS, and other folks at Beach Braces in Manhattan Beach can help put a smile on the face of your teenager. Give us a call today.

Foods to avoid during Thanksgiving

Braces and Thanksgiving foods to avoid and foods that are safe

With the Thanksgiving season coming up you may be wondering about some of the foods that you can eat safely as you attend your holiday feasts. Adapting to major events like holidays is always difficult when you first get braces. It’s very important that you follow this guide and potentially even bring your own menu choices for your Thanksgiving get-togethers so that you can avoid any damage to your braces or any concerns for your oral health.

Eating the wrong foods could potentially set your overall treatment progress back and mean that you need to keep your orthodontic appliance on much longer than intended. Certain foods can also become lodged within your braces and impose oral health issues. Any food that cannot be removed from an orthodontic appliance will simply lead to bacteria build up in your mouth and this can cause cavities and other issues. Maintaining your oral health is extremely important through the holidays and although you may be missing out on some of your favorite foods through Thanksgiving, remember that it will all be worth it when you finally have the perfect smile you’ve always dreamed of. Here are some of the biggest foods to avoid, and foods that are safe for consumption with braces or an orthodontic appliance on.

Foods to avoid:

Nuts:

Nuts are hard and crunchy and can cause damage as well as stick inside your orthodontic appliances.

Popcorn:

If you bite a hard kernel your braces could become damaged and the soft parts of popcorn can very easily get stuck in braces as well.

Chips:

Although chips are easy to eat pieces of chips can stay lodged in orthodontic appliances and are very difficult to get out. Chips should always be avoided if you wear braces.

Hard or sticky foods:

Most hard candies or sticky gummy candies should all be avoided.

Caramel:

Caramel is one of the most instructive foods that you can eat while wearing an orthodontic appliance. It can be hard as well as notoriously sticky and this means that it will only work to damage an orthodontic appliance should you try and eat it.

Foods that you can eat during Thanksgiving with braces or an orthodontic appliance:

Turkey and ham:

As long as you aren’t eating these off the bone and you are able to cut them into small and manageable pieces both of these Thanksgiving treats are perfectly safe to eat with an orthodontic appliance on.

Potatoes:

food to avoid

Photo from www.delish.com

Mashed potatoes are easy to eat with orthodontic appliances on but you may want to avoid roasted or hard potatoes.

Corn:

If you take corn off the cob you can eat it just fine with an orthodontic appliance.

Green beans:

As long as they have been cooked well you should face no problems.

Dressing:

As long as it’s not too crunchy you should be able to eat dressing just fine.

Some desserts:

Desserts like Jell-O or even some pie can be okay to eat just as long as they aren’t too crunchy. Always be sure to brush your teeth after you eat any desserts.

If you have any other questions or concerns about foods that you should eat or avoid with your orthodontic appliance do not hesitate to contact Beach Braces today.

Chuck your Toothbrush

toothbrush

Words of wisdom No.2: “Chuck your Toothbrush”

Complete oral hygiene does not end by just brushing your teeth at least twice a day. Experts advise to also change the head of your electric toothbrush every two to three months. If you don’t, you’re just putting old bacteria back to your mouth every time you brush your teeth. If you’re not using an electric toothbrush, then you need to buy a new one (since you can’t change just the head). The time frame of two to three months does not even mean that by merely following this rule of thumb you’re complying enough to save your teeth from falling.

Experts also say that you need to look and feel the bristles of your brush. If you can see that the bristles are already torn or are going in different directions, then it’s a very good indication that you need to change it even if you’ve only been using it for a month.

Harold Katz, a Beverly Hills dentist, said that the best way to clean your teeth is to brush them with your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against your gums. He also added to do it in a circular motion rather just up and down or back and forth motion. Brushing too hard will also damage your teeth and gums so make sure to apply just the right amount of pressure.

You can hold your brush just like when you’re holding a pencil to make sure you don’t brush your teeth that hard. By following the simple steps above, then you can make sure you’re on the right track when it comes to cleaning your mouth and teeth thoroughly.

If you are going away for Columbus Day or spending time with friends is also very important that you keep track of any removable appliances. For patients that use retainers or Invisalign dental aligners it’s very important that they keep track of their appliances and continue to use them over the course of the holiday. We understand that sometimes appliances can be lost or damaged over the long weekend and if this occurs make sure to phone into our answering service or e-mail us directly so that we can order you a replacement appliance as soon as possible.

If you go without your appliance for a long period of time it can greatly impact the length of your treatment and extend the length of your treatment. Make sure to continue wearing your appliance and to keep track of it especially when you are traveling, it can be a costly expense to replace it. Enjoying Columbus Day with friends and family may also affect your diet especially if you have a permanent orthodontic appliance. Make sure to consider your food options before going out to an event.
