2 Food Checklists to Avoid Brace Problems 2016

food

Food is essential. Most of us pretended our chewing gum was braces more than once throughout our childhood, but we didn’t have to live with them. It’s safe to say we all went through a phase where we thought wearing braces was cool, especially when our friends were showing off their cool new colorful bands. Orange and black during the Halloween season, and they boasted red and green when it was Christmas. We looked at our straight teeth in the mirror and tried to convince our parents they were crooked and we needed thousands upon thousands of dollars in metal in our mouths.

What were we thinking? There’s nothing particularly enjoyable about needing our smiles corrected, but many people go through life with crooked teeth easily fixable with the help of some orthodontic correction. Growing up, wearing colorful bands was a fun idea. Our friends who did require a mouth full of metal didn’t think it was so much fun when they realized just how limited they really were as it pertained to eating and basic oral hygiene. Braces might seem like a lot of fun to those who don’t wear them, but there’s some serious limitation involved. The biggest challenge comes when you can no longer eat your favorite things. Your orthodontist recommends avoiding a number of specific food items with orthodontics in your mouth.

Food to Avoid

Your orthodontic appliances are nothing more than metal and wire holding your teeth together to help straighten them and keep them in line. They’re not nearly as strong as you might imagine, which leaves them highly susceptible to damage from certain food items.

  • Sticky candy
  • Hard chocolate
  • Nuts
  • Hard taco shells
  • Popcorn
  • Ice
  • Pretzels
  • Crackers
  • Hard cookies
  • Gum
  • Hard candy

These are items your orthodontist wants you to stay away from at all costs. Each one is designed to taste amazing, but they’re not good for your mouth’s new hardware. Hard, sticky items such as these do a number on your orthodontics, which causes more problems for your mouth. These are foods most susceptible to becoming stuck in your metal or wires, and sometimes that’s more painful than anything else.

Its only for a while

It’s not easy to say goodbye to these items when your mouth is full of hardware, but you shouldn’t eat any of the items on this list. Try to remind yourself it’s not forever. You aren’t being asked to give up your favorite movie theater popcorn for the rest of our life. You’re only giving it up until your smile is picture perfect and your hardware is removed for good.

Your kids might not appreciate all the changes they’re making now that they have a mouth filled with hardware, but you will. Not only do they need to be extra careful with their food, they have to get rid of some nasty habits. Do your kids bite their nails or chew on their pens when they’re sitting in class? If they do, they have to stop now. These are both dangerous to the hardware in their mouth. It can cause the wires to snap, the metal to bend, and another trip to the orthodontist to become necessary.

Food to Be Careful With

As if avoiding things like hard Taco Tuesday when your mouth is full of metal isn’t depressing enough, that’s not all you have to be careful with. Your orthodontist is going to provide you a list of things you should be very careful eating when you have your new hardware applied to your teeth. These are foods you can eat, but you need to cut up, break apart, and be very careful with during your meals.

  • Subs
  • Corn on the cob
  • Croutons
  • Thin pizza crust
  • Bread
  • Raw veggies
  • Rolls
  • Burgers
  • Meat
  • Fruit

If you love these items, you’ll feel good knowing you can still eat them. Just be careful with them as you eat. Try cutting them into small pieces, breaking your bread apart, and pulling your corn off the cob. These items tend to get stuck in your mouth, which can cause some damage to the hardware in there. You’re not going to have a difficult time eating them if you’re just a bit more careful about what you put into your mouth.

The good news is you can still eat most anything you loved before, but you have to be careful. You might not be able to have hard taco shells on Taco Tuesday, but you can have soft ones for a while. When your hardware is removed, you can go back to eating anything you want without worrying about your expensive hardware breaking. If you’re a child reading this, it does get better.

Good Hygiene Habits

Right now the excitement of having a mouth filled with metal is wearing off for the kids, and you’re dealing with unhappy little people who just want hard candy and popcorn. They’re unhappy about all the life changes they’ve had to make since their visit to the ortho, and you’re left dealing with the aftermath. It’s going to become slightly more difficult when you have to inform your kids they need to be extra careful with their teeth cleaning and care with all that equipment in there.

One of the first things you’ll do when your kids come home from the ortho with their new mouth accessory is replace their toothbrush. They need one with very soft bristles, as they are much less likely to damage the wires and metal. Your kids also need to begin flossing right away. If they weren’t great about it before, now is the time for them to get used to it on a regular basis. The ortho wants your kids to start brushing and flossing every time they eat. Food tends to get stuck in the wires and metal in their mouth. It can cause far more issues than not if it remains there.

It’s a good idea to provide your kids with a secondary soft toothbrush and some floss to carry with them to school. You might provide their teachers with a note stating they need a moment after lunch to run into the restroom and brush to keep their mouth healthy.

In Addition

In addition to practicing extra precaution with their new accessory, your kids need to consider additional mouth protection when playing sports. Your kids can still pay sports. There’s no reason they need to quit just because of their new accessory, but they must practice extra care to prevent damage or injury. A custom mouth guard is the best idea on the top and bottom of the mouth. It’s important not only to keep hardware from becoming damaged but to keep your child’s mouth from becoming injured. It’s not uncommon for a child to tear his or her lips or another child’s skin a contact sport with their metal, and we know you want to practice extra precaution to prevent this from occurring.

It might seem that life is ending with all these rules and worries, but the reward is worth it in the end. Your child’s smile will light up a room when it’s perfect. The added confidence they receive from their new smile will change their life. It’s a bit of sacrifice for a time, but it’s not the end of the world. The kids will become used to things, and they will appreciate this sacrifice later in life. If anything ever happens to the hardware in their mouth, call the orthodontist right away. Make sure to schedule an appointment to repair it as quickly as possible with https://www.beachbraces.org/. Dr. Panucci is there for you when you need additional care for your mouth, if you have questions, or if you have concerns about your new hardware.

2 Food Checklists to Avoid Brace Problems 2016

Gluten-Free Grain Free Caprese Mini Pizzas

Gluten-Free Grain Free Caprese Mini Pizzas

Gluten-Free Grain Free Caprese Mini Pizzas

Ingredients

Crust

  • 5 cups cauliflower florets
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ¾ cup low-moisture part-skim shredded mozzarella cheese (3 oz)
  • ¼ cup shredded Parmesan cheese

Toppings

  • 2 plum (Roma) tomatoes, thinly sliced (at least 18 slices)
  • 6 oz fresh mozzarella cheese, cut into 6 slices
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 5 large fresh basil leaves, shredded

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 425°F. Line cookie sheet with cooking parchment paper; spray paper with cooking spray. Set aside.
  2. Place half of the cauliflower in food processor. Cover; process until very finely ground. Repeat with other half of cauliflower. Transfer to microwavable bowl. There should be about 3 cups of packed cauliflower.
  3. Microwave cauliflower uncovered on High 5 minutes. Meanwhile, place colander over a large bowl. Line colander with kitchen towel. Transfer microwaved cauliflower to towel; set aside to cool about 10 minutes or until cool enough to handle. Squeeze water from cauliflower by wrapping the towel around it and twisting. Remove as much liquid as possible. Set aside to cool 5 minutes.
  4. In medium bowl, beat egg, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon pepper and 3/4 cup mozzarella cheese with fork. Add cauliflower, and combine using hands, kneading mixture together. Discard any large bits of cauliflower.
  5. Sprinkle shredded Parmesan in 6 small mounds on cookie sheet. Divide dough into 6 equal balls; shape into hockey puck shapes. Place 1 piece of dough on top of each mound of Parmesan. Gently press out dough into discs, about 1/4 inch thick. Press together any ragged edges to prevent burning.
  6. Bake crust without toppings 20 to 25 minutes or until easy to turn; remove from oven, and use pancake turner to gently peel and release pizzas from parchment. Turn over pizzas, and top with 3 tomato slices per pizza, 1 slice fresh mozzarella, salt and pepper. Bake 8 minutes. Top with shredded basil.

Take Care of Your Teeth, Too

Being healthy doesn’t have to be boring; it can be fun. Here’s a tasty recipe for mini pizzas that will seem like a party and keep you hearty. These mini pizzas are completely gluten free–how do they do it? The crust is made from cauliflower and cheese, no gluten products at all. Also included in the crust are egg, salt, and black pepper. The toppings are tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, salt, black pepper, and fresh basil leaves. The ingredients are simple, healthy, and non-processed.

Another great way to be healthy is to care for your teeth. Be sure to visit the orthodontist to see if you need braces. Crowded teeth can lead to uneven wear, tooth decay, chipping, gum disease, and other problems. Braces can correct this and can even be invisible with invisalign.

Teeth-friendly Fruits & Vegetables No. 10: Pineapples

Healthy foods

It’s important to take care of your teeth before and after braces to ensure a winning smile. One of the best ways of taking care of your teeth involves eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables on a regular basis. When it comes to teeth-friendly fruits & vegetables, pineapple can’t be beat for its delicious flavor and health benefits.

Health Benefits of Pineapple

Pineapple has long been praised for its healing powers, which is why people are often encouraged to eat it just before and after surgery in order to make recovery go much smoother. Dentists recommend it for patients undergoing oral surgery as often as doctors who are performing procedures on other areas of the body do.

One of the reasons why pineapple aids with healing is the fact that it helps the body create collagen. Collagen is an essential protein used to form the basis for bones, blood vessel walls, and skin.

Other Health Benefits of Pineapple

There are other benefits aside from healing powers that can be enjoyed from eating pineapple. A few of these unique benefits include:

• Easing inflammation, which can be especially important for anyone suffering from gum disease
• Strengthening the bones, which in turn helps strengthen teeth
• Preventing oral cancers
• Fighting infections that might occur in the mouth and gums
• Improving circulation for healthier gums

Pineapple benefits teeth best when it is eaten fresh without any added sugars or syrups. Although fresh pineapple is best, some benefits can still be enjoyed from eating canned pineapple as well.

Eating the right fruits and vegetables is just as important as any other aspect of dental care. If you’re interested in straightening your teeth, or would like to learn more ways to help keep them healthy, contact Manhattan Beach Orthodontics at 310-379-0006.

Teeth-Friendly-BB9

Teeth-friendly Fruits & Vegetables No. 9: Cucumber

Healthy foods

When it comes to keeping your teeth and gums healthy, eating cucumbers can be a delicious and easy way to good oral health.

BENEFITS ABOUND WITH CUCUMBERS

Teeth-friendly Fruits & Vegetables like cucumbers can offer quick benefits because:

  • The fiber within cucumber helps improve the health of teeth and gums when rubbed up against them during chewing.
  • That rubbing stimulates saliva which helps get rid of any bits of food and the sugars that wreak havoc on your teeth.
  • Gets rid of bad breath, which is caused by bacteria inside the mouth that can generate from lack of saliva.
  • Eliminates the potential of a dental scourge like Pyorrhea, which causes inflammation of tooth sockets and loosening of teeth.

THE COST FOR BRACES

Sometimes all the plans of maintaining healthy teeth still results in braces.

DOES INVISALIGN WORK?

Removable braces like Invisalign offers patients a virtually invisible product, and is roughly in the middle of that bracket. That begs the question: Does Invisalign work? It does when done by an experienced orthodontist, since this process isn’t simply putting on the product and waiting for teeth to magically straighten.

Each plan differs and requires someone who can carefully diagnose the proper way to put these plastic tools on and design the best treatment.

Teeth-Friendly-BB5

Teeth-friendly Fruits & Vegetables No. 5: Carrots

Healthy foods

Healthy eating is more than just about your waistline or a number on the scale. Eating the right foods can also ensure that you and your children’s teeth are strong and healthy. Finding the right teeth-friendly fruits & vegetables means that your smile, when combined with our care, will never look better.

Why are carrots good for my teeth?

We all know that, besides tasting great, carrots are chock full of important vitamins and minerals. These vital nutrients help build teeth health and prevent damage. Additionally, the crunchy nature of carrots actually helps clean teeth to prevent decay. So, for healthy teeth and a great smile, grab a carrot the next time you feel like snacking.

Are carrots ok to eat with braces?

Different types of braces have different food restrictions. Generally speaking, however, carrots are ok to eat with the proper precautions. We do suggest waiting a few days to eat harder foods, like carrots, after first getting your braces. Additionally, it’s a good idea to cut up the carrots to prevent injury or damage to the hardware.

You should have been provided with detailed information during your last visit on what foods are and aren’t permitted, but feel free to always call our office and ask for additional information if you aren’t sure about something.

Does Invisalign work even when eating carrots?

There’s a reason why Invisalign is taking the world by storm: the ease of continuing your life as normal while wearing it. Braces come with all sorts of food restrictions, while Invisalign does not. In other words, you can feel free to bite into a full carrot without a single concern in the world.

Remember, at Beach Braces, we like to focus on overall dental health. If you’re worried your smile could be better, then give us a call today; we would love the chance to work with you.

Teeth-Friendly-BB4

Teeth-friendly Fruits & Vegetables No. 4: Bananas

Healthy foods

Although the different types of braces available today are much more aesthetically pleasing than the bulky metal styles of the past, some patients still have a difficult time adjusting to their new look. Understanding what to expect before, during, and after braces help people feel more at ease about the whole process.

Preparation For Braces

Orthodontists and their especially trained staff members help parents explain the process to younger children so they know how to care for their teeth while wearing braces. They can also discuss some food limitations and the various teeth-friendly fruits & vegetables that can be enjoyed in place of other crispy, chewy, or sticky foods.

Proper Oral Hygiene

New patients can choose from a variety of different types of braces depending on the overall condition of their bite and any other unique needs or considerations. Choosing braces colors and styles is the fun part, but caring for teeth after braces have been applied is serious business. Using a proper oral rinse after meals and before or after brushing can be instrumental in dislodging food particles from the braces. Special tools are available to help individuals with braces carefully floss their teeth daily. In addition, it is vitally important to thoroughly brush teeth, gums, and braces at least twice per day.

Balanced Nutrition

Eating well while wearing braces is important for two main reasons. First, some foods and drinks, such as citrus fruits and sugary sodas, can damage tooth enamel. Second, braces can be sensitive and break when patients try to bite into hard foods such as corn on the cob or apples. Teeth-friendly fruits & vegetables such as bananas and grapes are perfect choices for individuals with braces. Bananas provide essential calcium and potassium that helps keep bones and teeth strong and healthy.

Teeth-friendly Fruits & Vegetables No. 3: Kiwi

Healthy foods

Teeth-friendly Fruits & Vegetables like kiwi are enhanced even more when you consider the amount of vitamin C packed into just one large sample.

KIWI BENEFITS

An oral-friendly fruit like kiwi can be best explained by showing its value in specific steps:

Offers more than 100 percent of your daily recommended daily amount of vitamin C, which is a natural collagen.
That supply of vitamin C is important when you consider that a lack of it results in more tender gums, which can cause pain and other potential problems.
When your gums are tender, they become more of a breeding ground for bacteria, which creates issues related to periodontal health.

THE CASE FOR BRACES

The determined efforts you make to keep your teeth white and as clean as possible unfortunately can’t guarantee keeping them straight. When that happens, the need for braces becomes evident, with the average cost of braces dependent upon a variety of different factors.

The main determinants in the price are based on what type of braces you select, how severe to problem is and whether one or both arches need such treatment.

Such an investment is due to advanced knowledge of the process that your orthodontist possesses and offer the best course of treatment.

AN UNBEATABLE SELLING POINT

The results become clearly evident by simply looking in the mirror before and after braces. The effect can provide a striking difference, resulting in a wide smile that others will appreciate for years to come.

Healthy foods

Having healthy teeth and gums is a process that needs be taken seriously, not giving teeth proper care can result in decay, loss of teeth and a grand hello to new dentures. When it comes to dental health, children who ruin their teeth due to their daily diets are just the start to a long downward spiral. According to a study done by Reader’s Digest, children at the age of five started at 9.7 cavities and, over one year, jumped up to 15.3, an increase of 5.6 cavities within one year. In order to prevent this problem from getting any farther, healthy choices need to be made. There are several teeth-friendly fruits & vegetables that not only provide health, but greatly improve teeth and gums. One of the tastier options on the list are apples.

Dental Health Benefits of Apples

  • The crunchiness of an apple works to remove plaque from teeth and also requires the mouth to produce more saliva, which works to keep the mouth free from bacteria.
  • Apples contain a large amount of fiber that is essential for strong teeth.
  • Apple cider vinegar us used as a stain remover for old or yellowed teeth.
  • The texture of an apple works to remove trapped food that has been wedged between the teeth.
  • Apples contain Vitamin C which is essential for developing healthy teeth and bones.
  • The juice within an apple keeps the mouth fresh and clean while also fighting against bad breath.
  • Chewing an apple takes more effort than some other foods, since it requires a lot of chewing, it works to strengthen the teeth and remove bacteria.
  • Apples are the perfect snack for before and after braces since they work towards removing particles within the braces as well as keeping teeth healthy and strong once the braces are gone.
